As suggested in last session’s Want to Know More? section, continue reading the Proverbs prologue daily, as much as you are able to in a single sitting. Each time the writer says “My son,” pause and jot a brief explanation of the issue that he addresses in what follows. Be on the lookout for your children to manifest these issues during the week, and schedule some intentional instruction time to deal with them. Search Me, O God For introspection during the coming week. What is my (and my spouse’s) relationship with each of our children—preventative, corrective or protective? Are we addressing each child’s successes and failures appropriately to these relationships? Do we punish the good kids too severely, or encourage them too sparingly? Do we allow the rebellious too much unchecked rebellion, and are we allowing them to run our lives? Should we consider stronger action for the good of these “bad” kids? Want to Know More? Regarding “making wisdom and correction beautiful” to our teens, read the speech of personified Wisdom in Proverbs 8:12-36 . Without doubt, this passage is generally descriptive of Christ, who is “the wisdom of God”—in addition to 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 and Colossians 2:3 referenced above, read also John 1:1-18 and Colossians 1:15-20 . Just understand that Solomon’s context is not Christological doctrine but the great worth of wisdom, so some of the specifics in the passage, particularly vv.22ff , cannot be affirmed of Jesus in an unqualified sense. Nevertheless, the passage clearly describes the beauty, joy, strength and rewards of wisdom, all of which will inspire you and your children to seek wisdom and to seek Christ, the very wisdom of God.
