Suicide Prevention Day The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Champlain East wants residents in Eastern Ontario to remember that suicide is not something that “happens to other people” but can affect family and friends. World Suicide Prevention Day is Sept. 10 with the theme this year of “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives”. The coalition is highlighting the event on its website at www.reachoutnow.ca with information on how to recognize the signs of someone who may be depressed or desperate enough to consider suicide as their sole option, and how to reach out to offer that person comfort and support as an alternative to ending their own life. The website also offers advice on how to help family and friends of a suicide to deal with the aftermath of that person’s death, including working through the grieving process and then being able to move on with their own lives. The coalition is a regional partnership of 23 organizations within the City of Cornwall, the United Counties of Prescott- Russell, the United Counties of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry, and the Akwesasne Nation. The group offers a safeTALK training program on the TALK method (Tell, Ask, Listen, and Keep Safe) to help a person who may be considering suicide to open up about their problem and find help to avoid taking that final option. Details on the safeTALK program are available by email to moshonasj@ cmha-east.on.ca or by phone to Joanne Ledoux-Moshonas at 613-933-5845, ext. 223. – Gregg Chamberlain Veuillez noter que nous serons en rénovation tout le mois de septembre
