BUILT FOR THE VIEW For 24 years on the Plateau, Bill Futral of Futral Enterprises has built on steep sites where foundations determine what can happen above.
On Upper Brushy Face in Highlands Country Club, Futral Enterprises started with a lot so steep that standing on parts of it was difficult. Before the house could rise, the crew first had to create usable ground. Retaining walls came first, along with a front wall about 17 feet tall. On a site this steep, the foundation becomes part of the architecture itself. While most Plateau properties would never require work on this scale, select locations demand extensive

site work to meet strict engineering requirements before construction can move forward. Once the foundation was complete and those requirements were met, a car could come off the road, follow what Futral called “a very gracious entry drive” and pull into a parking area.
