ELEVATE Fall 2026 | Highlands-Cashiers, NC

By the time Bill Futral founded Futral Enterprises N.C. in 2002, he and Gena had already been visiting Highlands for years. “Gena and I had been coming up here since the ’90s, hiking, fishing, biking. Just enjoying it like everyone else does, and thought it might be a great place to have a second home.” Bill and Gena moved from Atlanta in 2003, choosing Macon County, NC over DeKalb County in Georgia. They raised their daughter, Sarah, here, while Futral Enterprises grew its work across the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Bill had started his career in commercial construction in Atlanta. That background still shapes a company that works in both commercial and residential construction. On the residential side, clients often arrive with their own architects and interior designers, and Futral builds to their drawings. “Up here, I build for people that know what they want.” Futral holds a degree in Construction Technology from Georgia Southern University and a North Carolina unlimited building license, allowing Futral Enterprises to take on both residential and commercial construction. He also serves on the Highlands Zoning Board and the Macon County Tourism Development Commission. “

“That’s when they want to start, so we’ll start it.” Sometimes the schedule leaves less room. In 2019, Futral Enterprises began the Orchard House at The Farm at Old Edwards immediately after a late-season wedding. The tent came down Monday. Foundation work started Tuesday. The building had to be ready for the next spring’s wedding season. Building in the mountains also means building around the calendar. Futral prefers to start by fall, giving a crew time to get a house out of the ground, framed and closed in from the wind before winter. A mild winter may cost a project a couple of weeks. A cold, wet one can cost a month or two if the house is still exposed. As long as the crew can reach the property, they work.
