Bell Capital Cup contenders

They almost got it. The St-Isidore Aigles Atom C squad almost claimed the Bell Capital Cup for their own over the Christ- mas holidays. Theminor hockey teamfinished second overall in the Bell Capital Cup tournament at the Canadian Tire Centre inOttawa to round off their 2015 schedule of play. St-Isidore slammed Leitrim, Stittsville, and Nepean in three straight games in the round-robin session to claim their spot in the tournament quarter final match against Cumberland. They took down their opponents and ear- ned themselves a shot in the semi-finals against another atoms team fromStittsville. he opposition took a 1-0 lead early in the match, forcing the St-Isidore squad to battle back to win the game 2-1 on a gamble from the coaching staff. St-Isidore’s goalie sat out the play at the final twominutes of third period to give the teama six-man offensive line which resulted in a one-all tie on the scoreboard with 18 seconds left to play. Forced into double-overtime the two atoms squads fought for the winning goal with St-Isidore taking it in the end and ad- vancing to the finals against Pontiac. The score stayed tied at zero even though the Pontiac players were bigger and older on average compared to the St-Isidore squad. two more within the final two minutes of play to take the Cup with 3-0. Eagles Manager Myles McLaughlin said the St-Isidore squad showed true sports- manship, cheering on the Pontiac players during the end-of-tournament awards pres- entations.

Les Castors n’ont pas eu un début de sai- son facile, eux qui ont cumulé les défaites terminant l’année 2015 au dernier rang de la DivisionMartin. Ils ont toutefois entamé l’année 2016 du bon pied en inscrivant une victoire à leur fiche. Les Castors de Clarence ont commencé la nouvelle année par une victoire de 2 à 1 contre les Royals de Stittsville, le 3 janvier dernier. Les Royals ont d’abord pris les devants en ouvrant lamarque en début dematch, mais Suraj Bali des Castors de Clarence a créé l’égalité en deuxième période, avec l’aide

Le gardien de but des Castors, Ryan McLaughlin, n’est pas étranger à cette vic- toire, lui qui a bloqué 39 des 40 tirs dirigés vers lui. Son adversaire a pour sa part reçu 28 tirs, dont deux ont atteint le fond du filet. Le prochainmatch des Castors aura lieu le 8 janvier, contre les Glens d’Alexandria, au Glengarry Sports Palace. L’équipe sera ensuite de retour sur la glace locale le 10 janvier prochain, alors qu’elle affrontera les Aeros d’Athens à l’aréna de Clarence Creek.

Rangers vs. Lumber Kings The Rangers are back in Rockland for more junior A hockey action in the Central Canadian Hockey League. Gloucester hosts the Pembroke Lumber Kings at the Clarence-Rockland Arena on Jan. 8 at 7 :30 p.m. This is the first of the final four Rockland home-based tournaments for the Rangers this season– Gregg Chamberlain Nats’ New Year’s weekend The Rockland Nationals had a less-than-happy start to their new year schedule of games. The Cum- berland Bandits shut them out 6-0 Saturday night at the Ray Friel Recreation Complex then Gatineau Hull-Volant beat the Nats 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the Clarence-Rockland Arena. Vincent Martel and Patrick Sevigny scored solo goals for the Nats with assists coming from Benoît Brunet, Brandon Came- ron, Matthew Clifford, and Patrick Johnson. The Nats are in Embrun Friday night against the Panthers then return home for next Sunday afternoon’s scheduled game against the Papineauville Vikings. – Gregg Chamberlain
