BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND A Key Principle for Personal Development

The second creation is physical. At this juncture, you’ll follow the blueprint you laid out in the first creation and make your vision a reality. It’s not always perfect and smooth sailing, but it is guided with the end in mind.

Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” has been a mainstay in the personal development realm for decades. When the revolutionary concepts were presented in 1989, the way people approached their work began to change drastically. The principles taught in the book don’t just apply to business people on Wall Street — they’re for everyone. The immediate accessibility of the content provided a platform for millions to be more effective. “Begin with the end in mind” is the second habit of a highly effective person and a key aspect of how I approach my business. The truth is, this habit is somewhat based in imagination. But visualizing what you want from your life, your business, your family, or anything is key to understanding how to get there. Covey explains that this envisioning comes from the principle, “All things are created twice.” The first creation is a mental one. You formulate a vision and think of what you want your life to look like. From there, you have a measuring point from which you can ultimately define success. This carefully formulated purpose provides a platform for you to tackle the second creation.

Application of this concept doesn’t have to be limited to large, existential ideals. It can be applied to the very minutiae of life. What’s your end goal for taking the trash out? What does the end of the road look like for your business? Take the objectives of what you want for these, and work backward to find the steps needed to achieve them.
