It’s pretty organic how
it all happened! My parents own and operate a construction company (Stilo Excavation) that’s been in business for over 30 years. They used roll off containers on their job sites for their own purposes, owning roughly 20 at the time. I was in college at the time, but when I graduated, my dad saw a vision for what Stilo Disposal could be. So, when I graduated from Rutgers Business School in 2017, I took over the company and grew the business from 23 dumpsters to over 100 in a few years time. What products and services does your company provide? We provide 10, 20 and 30 yard roll off containers to commercial and residential customers throughout the State of New Jersey for mixed materials such as construction debris or household cleanouts. We are also licensed to haul hazardous waste and specialize in hauling dirt and asbestos. What differentiates you from others in your industry? Our service, without a doubt. Butch Wade, our Director of Business Development and Roll Off Sales has said many times, “we provide exemplary service at fair market price” and that stands true. We are confident in our service and have many longstanding customers who can attest to that. It’s a great feeling having new customers call in based off the recommendation of a previous, or current, customer. We try to never let a service call go over 24 hours and often times can provide same day service, sometimes within only a few hours! Best Advice you have received? The best advice I have received in life and in business is to be true to yourself and focus on you (or your business in this instance). Comparison is the thief of joy. Amazing things can come from having this mindset. What do you see/believe are the most important issues in your industry today? I would say different regulations and laws that impact waste management in New Jersey, and the United States as a whole. It all has an impact on our business and how we operate as well as the costs to operate.
For example, when the gas prices were rising significantly last year, we had to implement a fuel surcharge where applicable. The impact of rising gas prices could be felt across many industries nationwide. It’s important to stay current with what’s going on in our country and around the world. What advice do you have about marketing/social media to build business? We live in such a digital world that it’s crucial to have some sort of social media presence. I love to post pictures, on Instagram especially, of our roll off trucks and containers on various job sites. It helps with brand recognition and shows our customers who we are. We are so proud of how we maintain our equipment. Our drivers (Kevin Kloza, Dave Tavarez and Troy Jackson) have a lot of pride in the trucks they drive and they wash them several times a week. Have you/your company been involved in any charitable efforts? Yes, we donate to various organizations in our community to support our youth including the South Plainfield HS Robotics Team. We also support our NJ State Police, South Plainfield Police & Fire Departments. Funniest or most surprising customer interaction? Sometimes my customers call me and tell me a joke or something funny that may have happened on their job site. I really appreciate when they do because it’s unexpected! It brings me a lot of joy to interact with our customers on a daily basis. How did you get involved with Metro initially? Butch had mentioned to me that we should look into joining Metro and I had spoken to one of our customers, Country Classics, who is also a member and from there, we decided to join! Why did you join Metro? I wanted to get more involved with legislation and impacting younger women to be in business. I feel it is so empowering to be a woman in business, especially in waste management which is predominately men. I hope to inspire others to want to be businesswomen too.
