44 Endeavor Society, a prominent National organization working among young people. Back in 1906, Rev. Horton had been one of the principle speakers .,,.,- .=...-.-.... ~ ----- -- at the State Christian Endeavor Convention -in--~:B~rkley, California. This . gave him opportunity to meet hundreds of young people from various parts of the State. Many from the Southern California area kept in touch with him after the Convention; some of them had participated in the tent meetings supervised by him in the Summer of 1907. A number of them became members of the Fishermen's and Lyceum Clubs when they were organized, and some of them eventually enrolled in the Institute when it was opened. Because the Fishermen's and Lyceum Clubs played such a vital role in thE founding of Biola, and because the School and these Clubs are intertwined, · it is difficult to recite the history of Biola without including them. The two Clubs played not only a vital role in the beginning of Biola but also a major role in the first twenty-five years of its history. Therefore, in the history of Biola University, it is necesary to know something about the back- ground of the two Clubs. When sixteen Young men met at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angele~ Monday evening, April 16, for Bible study and for instruction in personal work, the Fisherme_n • s Club was formed. From the beginning, "Daddy Horton," as he was affectionately called by the young men, stressed the need for per- sonal work and the responsibility to the Lord of every Christian to be in- I volved in such work. The Fishennen •s Club, an interdenominational Bible Club for young men, adopted as its motto a statement from Matthew 4:19, "And he saith unto them, 'follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'" Soon the Club outgrew the facilities at Immanuel Presbyterian Church and moved to the Fifth Street Department Store, one of the leading Department stores in the City. In 1910, the Fishermen's Club was incorporated under the laws of the State of Calif- ornia, after which Branch Clubs were established in several churches in and near Los Angeles, and later throughout much of the United States, Palestine,
