Add costumes and leftover candy for an easy end to the day. Best for: A cozy Halloween night at hom e. Not-So-Scary Halloween Halloween doesn’t have to mean haunted houses and jump scares. For younger children, look for daytime costume events, pumpkin activities, crafts and outdoor celebrations where the emphasis is firmly on fun rather than fright. Halloween Tip: Popular Halloween events can sell out, particularly on weekends close to October 31. Check individual venues before visiting and book ahead where required. family experiences of the season. Best for: Halloween traditionalists!

NYC Fall

New Brooklyn Science Spot Brings Hands-On STEM Fun to Kids

How many can your family tick off before winter arrives? Complete the whole board and you’ve officially made the most of fall in NYC!

There’s a new place for curious kids to explore, experiment and get seriously hands-on with science. Brooklyn Science Spot is all about turning children’s natural curiosity into exciting real-world discoveries through experiments, building challenges, animal encounters and plenty of opportunities to ask “what if?” Created around the idea that science should be fun, interactive and accessible, Brooklyn Science Spot combines elements of a lab, museum and neighborhood hangout. Kids are encouraged to observe, test, build, mix and experiment while developing skills across science, technology, engineering, math, art and more. Families can sign up for weekly classes and after-school programs covering a wide range of STEM themes, with activities that might include building bridges, launching rockets, creating colorful chemical reactions, engineering structures or meeting live animals. The focus is firmly on learning by doing, so kids are actively involved rather than simply watching.

Brooklyn Science Spot also runs camps when school is out, including holiday break programs filled with experiments, building projects, creature encounters and themed science activities. How to Do Thanksgiving in NYC With Kids

Thanksgiving in New York City is a special time for families, with plenty to enjoy beyond the big meal itself. From parade traditions to festive outings, there are lots of ways to make the most of the long weekend. For many families, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the main event. Giant character balloons, floats, performers and marching bands fill Manhattan on Thanksgiving morning. Watching in person is unforgettable, but it does mean an early start and big crowds, so families with younger children may prefer a viewing spot farther uptown. Another favorite tradition takes place the evening before, when the giant parade balloons are inflated around the American Museum of Natural History. It’s a fun way to experience some of the parade excitement without committing to Thanksgiving morning.

After the celebrations, head outside for a family walk through Central Park or Prospect Park, along Brooklyn Bridge Park or beside the Hudson River. Thanksgiving weekend is also when NYC really starts to feel festive, with ice rinks, holiday markets and seasonal displays appearing across the city. It’s also a lovely time to encourage children to give back. Look out for food drives, community collections and family-friendly volunteering opportunities taking place in the run-up to Thanksgiving. Of course, staying home can be just as memorable. Bake together, make Thanksgiving crafts, watch a family movie or create a gratitude list. Whatever you choose, plan ahead. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times of the year in NYC, so check timings, entry details and any restrictions before heading out.

In the Blink of an Eye,We’re Back to School!

Back to school has a habit of arriving very suddenly. Before the alarm clocks are reset and the morning rush begins again, here are a few things worth getting sorted. A Week or Two Before • Check backpacks, lunchboxes and water bottles are still school-ready • Order any last-minute uniform, clothes or shoes • Label jackets, sweaters, bottles and anything else likely to disappear • Check the school supply list before buying extras you don’t actually need • Add school closures, early dismissals and important dates to your calendar • Confirm after-school classes, activities and pick-up arrangements • Start nudging bedtimes and wake-up times back toward the school routine • Check your child’s Student OMNY card or transportation arrangements • Make sure the school has your current phone number and emergency contacts • Restock the grab-and-go snacks A Few Days Before • Try on the first-day outfit — including the shoes

• Work out breakfast for those first few mornings • Clear a spot for backpacks, coats and school papers • Check the route to school if anything has changed • Charge tablets, laptops and other school devices • Talk through the first day, particularly with younger children or anyone starting a new school • Make one last summer plan before routines officially take over The Night Before • Pack the backpack • Fill the water bottle • Prep lunch or lunch money • Lay out clothes • Check the weather — because September in NYC can be anything • Set the alarm • Put shoes, jackets and bags by the door • Aim for an early-ish night And parents: charge your phone, find your coffee cup and remember that nobody’s first school morning goes completely to plan. You’ve got this.

NYC Public Schools Calendar 2026

Sweaters, Scooters & School Schedules

Keep these important dates handy for the start of the 2026–27 school year. September 2026 September 10 First day of school September 21 Yom Kippur – schools closed October 2026 October 12 Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day – schools closed October 13 Staff development day – students do not attend school

Fall in New York with kids is less about picture-perfect leaf peeping and more about navigating the everyday realities of a new season in the city. September starts with getting back into school routines, signing up for classes and trying to remember which day everyone needs sneakers, instruments, library books or something else that definitely wasn’t mentioned until breakfast. Then there’s the weather. One morning everyone needs jackets, by lunchtime it feels like summer again and somehow you’re carrying most of what your children left the house wearing. As October arrives, Halloween starts taking over the neighborhoods. Brownstone stoops get increasingly elaborate, local stores put out candy and costume plans

November 2026 November 3 Election Day – students do not attend school November 11 Veterans Day – schools closed November 26–27 Thanksgiving Recess – schools closed December 2026 December 24–January 1 Winter Recess – schools closed Good to Know This calendar applies to New York City Public Schools from 3-K through Grade 12. Private, charter and parochial schools may follow different calendars, so always check directly with your child’s school.

change repeatedly right up until October 31. Some of the best Halloween moments aren’t at big ticketed events at all — they happen on your own block. The shorter days change family life too. After-school playground time disappears earlier, scooters get dragged home in the dark, indoor weekend plans suddenly become much more useful and those random school closure days have a habit of arriving much faster than expected. By November, coats are properly back, Thanksgiving plans are being made and the city is already beginning its transformation into the holiday season. It’s busy, a little unpredictable and very New York — which is exactly why fall here with kids can be so much fun.
