A Conversation about Pain Management | 16 |
Chronic Pain is a common condition that affects many individuals in the United States. | 16 |
Chronic Pain is a common condition that affects many individuals in the United States. | 16 |
The Gateway Veteran spent a few moments with Interventional Pain Management | 16 |
Specialist and Anesthesiologist, Dr. Kathleen “Kate” Meacham, MD, PhD., to learn | 16 |
more about what VASTLHCS offers Veterans who suffer from chronic pain. | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
: What is Interventional Pain Management? | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
: Interventional Pain (IP) Management is the part of Comprehensive Pain | 16 |
Management that involves injections, procedures, and devices for reducing or blocking pain. | 16 |
Usually these procedures are injection-based and can promote healing, reduce inflammation, | 16 |
and/or change the way that pain is felt by the body. | 16 |
We work for and with the Veteran-- | 16 |
We work for and with the Veteran-- | 16 |
based on what is important to them--and what works best | 16 |
for their pain management goals. | 16 |
As our VA’s IP specialist, I work closely with the Veteran’s entire | 16 |
healthcare provider team to ensure that each Veteran has a coordinated and comprehensive plan | 16 |
for meeting their chronic pain needs. | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
: Tell us about patients who come to see you for Pain Management. | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
: More than 1 in 5 adults | 16 |
* | 16 |
in America experience chronic pain, with numbers being | 16 |
even higher for Veterans. Many suffer in silence, so it’s very rewarding when we get a chance to | 16 |
help. Veterans of every age, race, and gender come to see us for their Pain Management, which | 16 |
means I get to meet (and help) all types of amazing Veterans as part of my job. I can’t express | 16 |
enough what a tremendous privilege that is for me, every day. | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
Gateway Veteran | 16 |
: What types of treatments are available? | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
Dr. Meacham | 16 |
: Available treatments for managing chronic pain are growing, both in the field of | 16 |
Pain Management as well as here at our VA. We most recently added a procedure called “Radio | 16 |
Frequency Ablation” that target nerves in the back and knee. So many of my VA colleagues went | 16 |
above and beyond to make sure that I could do this, because they knew it would be of great | 16 |
benefit for our Veterans. With their support and guidance, I will continue to add procedures | 16 |
benefit for our Veterans. With their support and guidance, I will continue to add procedures | 16 |
based on what our Veterans need the most. | 16 |

: You mention something called “Radio Frequency Ablation” What is this? | 17 |
Dr. Meacham: | 17 |
Dr. Meacham: | 17 |
Radio Frequency Ablation (also called RF Ablation) involves using small needles to | 17 |
“burn” nerves that are transmitting pain. | 17 |
But we’re not actually burning them | 17 |
: it’s an electrical | 17 |
signal that stuns the nerves into not transmitting the pain. I love talking about the science behind | 17 |
all of what we do and thinking of new ways we might better help our chronic pain patients. There’s | 17 |
so much more for us to learn and do as a field. | 17 |

: What should I bring with me to my appointment? | 17 |
Dr. Meacham | 17 |
Dr. Meacham | 17 |
: For our Veterans in pain, just getting to the appointment can be hard, and is more | 17 |
than enough for us! We’ll work with you on anything else we need, which is most usually records | 17 |
from outside sources. Bringing those with you to the appointment helps us help you faster, but | 17 |
don't fret if you can't get these records right away as there are other options available. | 17 |
