For the second straight year, the River Rendezvous, hosted by the St. Lawrence Institute on May 8, attracted countless residents. Experts from Cornwall and surrounding areas were at the St. Lawrence College. “The organizations present all have the St. Lawrence River as their top priority,” said Karen Douglass Cooper, Community Action Officer for the St-Lawrence River Institute. “It’s growing. Last year we had 18 exhibits and this year we’ve got 25.” The said exhibits featured interesting topics such as the many steps taken in the hopes of saving the St. Lawrence River from pollution, as well as the many different sorts of wildlife it harbors. Eels and even salamanders were brought in, in the hopes of educating the masses about their natural neighbors. “By the end of the day, we expect 300 to 400 people to have crossed the doors of the college, wanting to learn more about the St. Lawrence River,” said Cooper. 2nd River Rendezvous

Cooking circle receives support

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

CORNWALL | Seniors in Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G will soon have new opportunities to take part in social and educational activities. Seniors in Stor- mont-Dundas and South Glengarry will receive financial support for the Cooking Circle, announced Guy Lauzon on May 5, on behalf of the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State for seniors. Lauzon will be announcing over $170,000 in projects in the coming months through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The first local project announced will see the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre re- ceiving $25,000 for their project, The Cook- ing Circle. The said project will increase social par- ticipation of older adults through an inter- generational culinary cooking program to increase knowledge of nutrition. In part- nership with the Boys and Girls Club and TR Leger Immigrant Services, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre staff will support older adults as they mentor youth through the transfer of culinary knowledge. Stu- dents will earn their required high school community service hours while they share their expertise in technology. Older adults and youth interested in participating can register by contacting Seaway Valley Com- munity Health Centre at 613-936-0306.

Marlborough Street South, the municipal parking lot on Montreal Road next to the Cornwall Police station and an empty lot on Louisa Street south of Montreal Road. “This will make it easier for both business owners and residents to pitch in and clean up around their properties and neighbor- hoods,” stated Dr. Michel Dubuc, Chair of Le Village BIA. To help launch the Spring Clean-UpWeek, a kick-off event was held on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the municipal parking lot next to the Cornwall Community Police Ser- vice East End Station on Montreal Road. “We are pleased to be involved in this initiative,” said Allison St. Louis, Chair of the Downtown Cornwall BIA. “It’s encouraging to see residents, schools, businesses and community organi- zations working in unison to beautify our community.” During the kick-off event, residents and groups were able to pick up clean-up sup- plies, consisting of garbage bags and gloves for their clean-up assignments. Residents were also able to drop off their electronic waste and gently used items on site, free of charge.

CORNWALL | The City of Cornwall and Le Village and Downtown Cornwall Busi- ness Improvement Areas all joined forces during the week of May 3 to May 10 in an effort to beautify the city, during this year’s annual Spring Clean-Up. During the week, residents were encouraged to get involved in the City’s clean-up efforts by forming teams and cleaning a park, bou- levard or other public space. Teams who registered in advance had a chance to win prizes. “This is shaping up to be our big- gest clean-up event to date,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “It’s a great way to show our community pride and make our City look even better.” With the support of Le Village and oth- ers, several garbage bins were placed in the Downtown and Le Village areas for the du- ration of the week. The locations included the former Cornwallis site on Second Street West, George Assaly Lane on Pitt Street, the entrance to the Eco Park on Race Street, the parking lot of Porter’s Restoration on

CORNWALL | Whether you are interested in a new hairstyle, or trying out a new wardrobe, nothing expresses individua- lity quite like a fantastic set of nails. For Victoria-Lys Hunter, owner of Ongles Chez Victoria , this is all so true. “Nail Art allows the consumers to take risks and express themselves in ways they might not otherwise explore,” said Hunter. “Nail art is temporary and can change at the next appointment. A woman can express herself while still maintaining a strict dress- code or business like appearance while at work. That freedom of expression is very liberating and addictive.” A native of Chateauguay, Quebec, Mrs. Hunter decided to relocate to Cornwall in October of 2013. Having previously worked in hairdressing and office administration, her passion for cosmetology was the final

push she needed to venture into the nail art busi- ness sector. She is now the pro- prietor of Ongles ChezVictoria and offers bilingual services from Bi- anca’s Hair Salon located on Elev- enth Street at the Leduc Shop-

Change your mattress

Did you know that you’ll spend about a third of your life asleep? Eight hours a day — the equivalent of a working day — is spent sleeping in order to recharge your batteries and allow the body to relax. This is why it is so important to pay particular attention to your mattress, which has a direct influence on the quality of your sleep, and even the quality of your life. Experts recommend that mattresses get changed every seven years, or ten years at the very most. However, if you’re tired when you wake up, or stiff, your current mat- tress may be the culprit. Getting a new one immediately might solve the problem. The same thing applies if your partner’s movements cause the springs in the mattress to squeak or if you’re always rolling toward the dip in the middle of the bed.

Syd Gardiner, the city representative for the Regional Airport Commission, stressed that an aviation fuel tax wouldn’t greatly affect the Cornwall Regional Airport. The po- tential tax would impose a four-cent hike on aviation fuel. But according to Gardiner, the local airport already features low fuel prices compared to the rest of the province, therefore the hike wouldn’t impact it by much. The city councillor is attempting to ex- pand the airport’s runway in the hopes of commercializing it. This in turn would bring in higher profits to the city. Cornwall will be hosting the Canadian Nationals of Slalom Skateboarding on August 30. The two day event will wel- come more than 40 skateboarders from across the country and will take place behind the Civic Complex. The competi- tion will focus on racing down a course marked with flags and poles, instead of stunts. “Everybody likes to race,” ex- plained Claude Regnier, former Canadian Nationals slalom champion. “This aspect of skateboarding is all about racing.” Skateboard Nationals in Cornwall
