Take Back The Night September 14

newsroom@eap.on.ca A LFRED

The fourth edition of the Take Back The Night women’s walk will be held September 14 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, at 520 St-Philippe St., Alfred. Those needing transportation are asked to call CentreNovas before September 8. For more information, call Jeanne Françoise Mouè at Centre Novas – CALACS francophone de Prescott-Russell at 613- 764-5700 or 1-866-992-7722 extension 222 . Organized by several agencies and the Township of Alfred-Plantagenet, the walk is meant to raise awareness about violence against women, particularly sexual assault whose victims are primarily women and young girls. “It is important to convey the message to the population that sexual violence is no longer taboo. We publicly expose sexual violence and together, we will build secure communities for women and children,” say organizers. Increasing public awareness is a way to build united communities, says Melissa Nadon of Maison Interlude House. “It’s by participating in prevention and educational activities that change can be made in the behaviour and beliefs of the community,” she says. Monique Bastien, representing Alfred-Plantagenet adds: “It offers the opportunity to stand together against violence, harassment and sexual assault that are committed against women. This is everyone’s concern: victims, friends, colleagues and family members.” Transportation is being provided by 417 Bus Line Ltd. while the Knights of Columbus council is donating the use of the hall.

School buses returned

newsroom@eap.on.ca

Now that students have returned to school, motorists are being advised to be on the look-out for school buses and students. The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding the public that every driver on a highway while meeting a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing. Many of children walk to school and motorists should also be aware of the increased pedestrian traffic around schools. Reduce your speed in school zone andbe extra cautious.
