WINNER: Green Technology Project of the Year ALTERNATIVE HEAT, LEEDS COUNCIL DECARBONISATION OF MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS Renewables are the talk of the town in the industry and Alternative Heat’s advanced technical solution using modular technology to create a renewable solution for the Leeds Council really impressed the judging panel. The project included both new and existing commercial developments, and even the local zoo was equipped with a new zero-carbon ASHP system as part of a deep decarbonisation policy. The new ASHPs ensure they can cover 90% of each site’s annual heat load demand, maximising the carbon savings available by the scheme. The project also displayed the company’s impeccable logistics, as they delivered the work simultaneously in 24 live public sites, with minimum disruption to core building functions. The judges described the project as “futuristic and innovative”, with a stand-out entry and impressive design and installation at this 5000 sq ft property. The use of many existing and natural resources on site to create a futureproof green solution also caught the judges’ attention. The panel was especially impressed by the huge natural outdoor swimming pool where the ground loops were installed for the geothermal system. An existing stream was rerouted into the pool to guarantee an adequate supply of fresh water. The company also received high praise from the project management team for the build, who stated their “Consultation and communication were excellent, and the sub- contract work was completed on time and within tender cost.” Jonathan Duff from Heating & Energy Solutions with Mary Coughlan from sponsor Calor.
