The category featured very strong contenders, but the decision came down to Brendan’s exceptional plumbing work in both fitting and underfloor heating carried out in a complete refurbishment of a large 6-bed home. The judging panel was simply blown away by the quality of workmanship beautifully shown in the photos. The installation of an unvented hot water system done by Brendan in an old-cottage-style house also caught the judges’ eye, as the plumber faced challenges such as thick stone walls and dated plumbing, having to redesign and install the pipework. These installations are a real testament to Brendan’s commitment to quality since he started in the industry, in 1985. Growing up during the Troubles, the plumber remembers how hard it was for business and the community to simply keep going. “This is one of the reasons my business ethos is to always give back to my community,” he commented. Brendan founded B Murray Plumbing and Heating Services in 2005 and has taken that promise very seriously, not only offering discounts and sometimes free services to people facing hard times and the elderly but also supporting the education of his employees. Today, Brendan works as a solo business trader and, after multiple recessions and a pandemic, his history of perseverance and care for others has been simply inspirational. The judges were blown away by the innovative methods used by NUGENT at the new Students’ Union Building at Queen’s University Belfast. The contractor provided Building Information Modeling (BIM) Level 2, video demonstrations, and, to save time and labour, all components were designed, planned, manufactured and pre-assembled at their Pomeroy HQ. All products were tested even before having arrived on site, and the panel felt this level of organisation and foresight to ensure the highest quality service was nothing short of brilliant. Main contractor Felix O’Hare & Co Ltd was all praise for the installation completed by NUGENT: “The team of experts provided an exceptional service throughout the project from pre-construction right through to handover.”
