LAUGH IT OFF

ON ATLANTA’S ILLEGAL STREET RACING AND DUIS

Through the pandemic and its slightly emptier streets, illegal street racing has become more and more popular. It can wear down parking lots, streets, and even driveways; it also causes a lot of noise in otherwise quiet neighborhoods. As a very dangerous and thrilling sport, this kind of stunt driving poses a huge problem for the residents and police department of Atlanta.

WHAT QUALIFIES AS RACING?

Georgia law explicitly prohibits “any vehicle on a highway of this state from participating in any race, speed competition or contest, drag race or acceleration contest, test of physical endurance, exhibition of speed or acceleration, or for the purpose of making a speed record.” Racing itself is defined as “the use of one or more vehicles in an attempt to out-gain, outdistance, or prevent another vehicle from passing, to arrive at a given destination ahead of another vehicle, or to test the physical stamina or endurance of drivers over long-distance driving routes.” If convicted of racing, you may be charged with any punishment under the misdemeanor sentencing statute. This means you could get anything between fines up to $1,000 plus court costs, license suspension, community service, jail time, probation, and more.

INGREDIENTS • 3 tbsp olive oil, divided • 1 tbsp garlic, minced • 1/2 cup onions, diced small

• 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper • 2 tsp sugar • 3 medium zucchini • Parmesan cheese, for garnish

• 1 lb ground turkey • 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes • 2 tbsp tomato paste

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large sauté pan over medium-low heat, warm 2 tbsp olive oil. 2. Add garlic and onions and stir constantly until garlic is golden and onions are translucent. 3. Increase heat to medium and add ground turkey, break apart, and cook thoroughly. 4. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper, and sugar. Reduce heat to low. Stir occasionally. 5. Using a spiralizer, mandolin, or vegetable peeler, cut the zucchini into noodles. 6. In another large sauté pan over medium-low heat, add remaining olive oil and zucchini noodles, tossing constantly for 2 minutes until slightly wilted. 7. Plate the zucchini noodles, top with the turkey Bolognese, and garnish with Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.

RACING AND DUIS

Racing and reckless driving charges are often accompanied by DUI charges. But street racers don’t have that luxury and, in some circumstances, may never drive again after a DUI. Trust us — you do not want to be charged with both street racing and a DUI. However, if you find yourself in a case with both racing and DUI charges, then you need an expert on your side — maybe even one of the best DUI lawyers in Atlanta. You can find them at Yeargan & Kert. We look forward to fighting for you, ensuring that justice is always on your side.
