CALLING ALL PET OWNERS This One’s for You!

We here at Foodtown and Freshtown love our pets, and we know that you feel the same! If you’re a pet owner, you probably consider your dogs, cats, and other animal companions family and splurge on special treats and toys from time to time. Some of us at Foodtown even spend more money on our pets than we do on ourselves, so we definitely understand the urge to spoil them. Because we know how expensive having a pet can be, we want to make those buying decisions as easy as possible, and that’s where our Pet Club program comes in. Every time you reach $100 in pet-related spending, your cashier will give you a $5-off coupon to use in our store. It’s a small way for us to say thank you for your business and keep your pets happy. If you have any doubt left that we’re pet people, this story from Foodtown co-president Noah Katz just might change your mind. In 2008, during a particularly cold winter, a beautiful gray cat had two kittens just behind the Foodtown main office in Mount Vernon, New York. The staff chipped in to put out food

and water every day for the new family, but one dark, chilly night, when Noah was locking up, he turned around to see the mother cat looking up at him, and he realized that the food was gone and the water left in the bowl was frozen.

“In that one instant, I knew that I would be taking care of her for the rest of her life,” Noah says.

He took the cat to the vet for a checkup, then went back for the two kittens. His family found the kittens new homes, but they kept the mother cat, who they named Mrs. Bigglesworth. “She is still with us, and my wife and two daughters love her as much as I do,” Noah says. “Needless to say, we buy all of her food and toys at Foodtown!” If you have any questions about our Pet Club program or any of the pet-related products we carry, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

When it comes to nutrition, salmon is king for its omega-3 fatty acids and high protein content, and nothing is tastier paired with shrimp! If you add the recipe below to your list this month, shop at Foodtown to get both seafood ingredients at a discount. SIMPLE BAKED SHRIMP AND SALMON

365 DAYS OF GRATITUDE

Ingredients

Can you imagine writing 365 thank-you letters? It sounds like a lot, but the process of writing them (all by hand, mind you) turned one man’s life around when he thought he had nothing left to be grateful for. John Kralik is the author of “A Simple Act of Gratitude,” the book that chronicles his journey from hopelessness to joy through saying "thank you." Kralik felt his life was at its lowest after a divorce and a failed year of business. During a hike on New Year's Day, he had a realization: “I needed to learn to be grateful for the things I had, rather than to focus on the things I wanted, or the many things I felt I had lost,” Kralik describes. He made the resolution to write 365 thank-you notes over the year, and the experience changed his perspective. “I became grateful as I noticed the good things in my life,” Kralik says. In the month of Thanksgiving, it’s a good reminder about the power of "thank you."
