College – Issue 40

Benson Geng-Wang – Year 9, Julius House Humour, Curiosity, Social Intelligence

Benson is thriving on College life and loves the opportunities it provides. A musician and an athlete, he was born in Christchurch, has been playing piano for six years and is sitting Grade 7 exams this year. He’s also in the Chapel Choir and has his sights set on a lead role in the Year 9 drama production. Summer sees him sprinting – in the Canterbury team for U14 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. “I’d like to go to the South Islands and to the nationals.” Athletic coach Bev Peterson is helping him improve his running posture and breathing and hone his technique. In class, he’s loving Drama, finding it “exciting but scary” having to speak before a large group; but when he can make people laugh he feels great.

Liam Alexander – Year 13, Somes House Fairness, Gratitude, Perseverance

When Liam came to College he was a tiny Year 9 student, nothing like the strapping guy in “seat 6” of the College’s 2020–21 rowing eight. He knew no one on his arrival from Waihi School, and right from the start rowing appealed. Over the past four years he can chart his growth in determination, making friends, resilience, enhanced time management skills, and pure strength. “I like it because all the boys are treated the same. We’re across all Houses and we all get along well.” Apart from rowing, which takes up most of his life, he also plays in the hockey 1st XI. He lists Psychology and Biology as his favourite academic subjects and is not yet certain of his career path. Liam spent two months in 2019 on a school exchange playing indoor hockey in Germany.

William Sudell – Year 11, Julius House Love of Learning, Honesty, Humour

If things work out the way William plans, he will pursue a career in mechatronics, a combination of mechanical and electronic engineering. “And I would love to work at NASA or at Rocket Lab.” It’s a way off yet, but his NCEA subject choices are made with the future in mind, with Drama and History proving great balances to Chemistry and Physics. “I like the way you can choose and it’s nice to have Drama as a subject and as an interest.” He’s in the cast of As You Like It , was in High School Musical 2 , and played trombone in the orchestra for Evita . He started learning the instrument at Medbury School and now plays in the Big Band. He’s into tennis in summer and squash in winter, and enjoys interacting with his peers and having fun.
