Name: Mohd Faizal Kasmani Title: BBC World News and Al Jazeera English Coverage: A Study of the Iran 2009 Presidential Election Institution: Australian National University Country: Australia Date: 2012 Language: English Abstract: Powerful concentrations of mass media in the hands of Western countries are believed to shape a lasting picture of Islam and Muslims. However, the complexities and ongoing dynamics of global news reporting have weakened those arguments because transnational news services, such as the BBC World News, CNN International and AI Jazeera English represent competing paradigms and different approaches to news. This study is a comparative analysis between BBC World News and Al Jazeera English channels. BBCWN is selected by the researcher to represent the mainstream Western media, and AJE is selected to represent the contra-flow category of global news media. The thesis investigates the differences and similarities in the news coverage both networks carried out for the Iranian presidential election in 2009. The research main findings showed that there was a degree of convergence in their coverage during the initial pre-election period but later, there was a clear divergence in their reporting. The BBCWN coverage gave clear support to the opposition group discourse and was more critical of the Iranian authorities, while AJE portrayed a more balanced and detached reporting of the election.
