160. Name: Abdullah H. Tamoun Title: News Policies: Reflections on Professional Performance in Arab Satellite Channels: A Case Study of Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya Channels Institution: International University of Africa Country: Sudan Date: 2017 Language: Arabic Abstract: This research examines the professionalism of Arab satellite channels and the relationship between media policies in the Arab region and professional performance of news broadcasters, focusing on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya as cases for this study. In this respect, the researcher tries to understand the causes of certain practices targeting media professionals and organizations such as harassment, arrests, assassinations, and closing down of offices of news channels. Methodologically, the study adopts a descriptive analytical approach in addition to a historical examination. Among the research main findings is that violation of media laws and policies in some Arab countries hinders the work of broadcasters and reporters and prevent them from performing their duties professionally, especially those working in conflict zones. In some Arab countries, the media are not allowed to disseminate specific news items considering them as threat to national security, contrary to the universal principles of freedom of the press. This research recommends the establishment of an effective Arab media system, the reduction of government control over news channels, and giving professionals the chance to contribute to the development of media policies.
