“Reach Your Peak Performance!” SPORTS INJURIES & POST SURGICAL REHAB

Exercise is an important part of life in order to get or stay healthy. For many people, sports isa funwayof burningextracalories, socializing and getting fit. Unfortunately, this also means the occasional sports injury, or a flareup of an old injury or condition. Almost everyone knows that exercise is good for the heart and lungs, and many people are such avid exercisers that they are of the mindset if they are going to have a health issue, they would rather it be orthopedic innature thancardiac. However, you don’t have to be a professional or even amateur athlete to suffer a sports injury. In fact, many times those most susceptible to sports injury are people who have just started exercising or do it on a recreational level, your typical weekend warrior. For the sake of brevity, sports injuries in this article will be defined as injuries to the musculoskeletalsystem, includingmuscles, bones and tissues such as cartilage. The most common sports injuries include: SPRAINS: A sprain occurs when the connective tissue that joins the end of one bone with another is stretched or torn. Those connective tissues are known as ligaments. Sprains are caused by trauma

such as a fall or blow to the body that knocksa joint out of position. Ankles, knees and wrists aremost vulnerable to sprains. However, back, neck, and shoulder sprains are very common too. STRAINS: A strain occurs when amuscle or tendon is pulled, torn or twisted. Strains are non-contact injuries, such as those that occur fromoverstretching. A common example of a strain is a muscle spasm. A back or neck strain is a very common injury treated in physical therapy.

KNEE INJURIES: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the knee is the most commonly injured joint. Orthopedic surgeons see more than 5.5million people annually for knee injuries, which can include runner’s knee (pain or tenderness close to the knee cap at the front side of the knee), tendinitis and iliotibial band syndrome (pain on the outer side of the knee). Severe knee injuries often include bone bruises or damage to the cartilage or ligaments. SHIN SPLINTS: Shin splints occur when there is pain along the large bone in the front of the lower leg, known as the tibia or shin bone. Shin splintsmost commonly occur in runners, especially those who are just starting a running program. This is usually due to poor alignment of the body, or weakness in the leg muscles. The good news is that Kerrville Physical Therapy Center can treat many orthopedic and repetitive motion injuries without the need for invasive surgeries or addictive medications. In fact, most doctors have their patients try physical therapy first, before recommending any other procedures. The licensed physical therapists at KerrvillePhysical Therapy Center can customize a programthat recognizes theweaknesses of your particularmusculoskeletal system, allowing you to recover quickly and stay active. Even, if you have an old injury, it is important tohave it evaluatedby our physical therapists toprevent long termdamage such as arthritis to your joints. If you have a new or old sport or orthopedic injury like tendinitis, arthritis, a stress fracture or low back pain, our therapists can design a treatment program to promote wellness and minimize the chance of re-injury.

Running Shoe BuyingTips:

1. Don’t think that more expensive equals better. Brands of running shoes vary greatly in price. Do your research. 2. Buy from a running store. Try on many brands and compare shoes that fit your gait. 3. Buy a shoe that you actually like. It doesn’t hurt to buy something you feel great wearing!

4. Visit your physical therapist to do a gait analysis. Checking whether you are a supinator, neutral or pronator is the first step into buying the right type of shoe.
