Hemp Highlights Providing an ever-growing range of impressive health benefits, this cousin of cannabis is in the news for all the right reasons.

Hemp is related to Cannabis sativa , or marijuana, but it does not possess its mental and psychoactive effects. Instead, it has been cultivated for centuries as a source of fibre, to make cloth, sails and rope, and most recently, for the highly nutritious oil which its seeds yield. Hemp oil is cold-pressed from the hemp seed in a natural raw process to carefully produce the highest quality vegetable oil possible. The oil contains: Vitamin E: Hemp seed oil provides high levels of the antioxidant vitamin E, which is required for support and maintenance of eyes, skin and soft tissues, along with the optimal function of the brain, joints and immune system. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it fights the free radicals in the body that trigger and accelerate signs and symptoms of ageing. Good fats: Hemp seed oil is especially rich in the ‘good’ omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are known to significantly reduce risk factors for heart disease, including LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and total cholesterol levels, as well as improving circulation of blood and lymph, reducing high blood pressure and triglycerides, and keeping the arteries, veins and capillaries strong and supple. Hemp oil is one of the healthiest culinary oils available! It has 40 percent

less saturated fat than olive oil and has a superior fatty acid profile to flaxseed oil.

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA): This fatty acid is found in only a few plant foods, including evening primrose oil and hemp seed oil. GLA has been shown to have particular benefits in alleviating inflammatory conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and itchy or dry skin conditions. Plant-based protein: Hemp seeds and the products made from it, including the oil, are one of a small number of plants that provide complete protein, which is defined as having all the essential amino acids present. It is an excellent alternative to cod liver oil for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone choosing to eat more plant-based foods.
