A 1888 Whitechapel murders attributed to Jack the Ripper. To finish the visit, the group experienced the indoor drop
ride, which simulates the mechanics of a historical Newgate Prison execution. It was a highly informative trip that provided valuable context regarding early modern justice, public health, and urban history. Beyond the specific events, the trip gave us a great chance to connect what we learn in class to real-world history. Seeing how harsh old laws were made everyone think about how much our legal system has changed over time. In the past, people faced extreme punishments like public execution or torture for very minor crimes, which is a massive contrast to the human rights laws we have today. Looking at these grim moments helped us understand how major health crises and old legal systems actually shaped the modern city of London. Ultimately, stepping out of the classroom and into these interactive exhibits gave Year 9 a much clearer, more realistic perspective on how tough life used to be for regular people in the past.
