FRENCH DRAMA CLUB
Have you ever wanted to learn a foreign language? Or lead a group of younger children through fun activities? Well that’s exactly what a group of year 7s and year 8s, like me, did. At this club, we gather every Tuesday in G3 after school for an hour to learn new French songs, games and vocab. We did this in preparation of becoming a monitrice (French leader) for the year 3 children at St James’s for one afternoon at the end of the term. I first joined the club because I take French as an extra subject and I thought it might help me with my French and be a fun side activity. However, it has proven to be much more than that. One of the reasons why I have enjoyed it so much is because it has made me feel more confident when speaking up in my language lessons. Another great aspect of the club is that you don’t even have to speak French to do it, so anyone can join! Not only that, but it is also an enjoyable way to connect with peers and try something new. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to improve their confidence in languages, learn how to be a leader or just wants to try
something new and fun.
Our role in the picnic was to lead, in pairs, a group of 10-15 Year 3s at St James’ Primary School through activities, such as traditional French songs and games (Frère Jacques and 1,2,3 Soleil, to name a few). We regathered as a big group and sang along with the French accordionist, Fifi La Mer, to songs such as Un Éléphant and Sur Le Pont D’Avignon. Afterwards there was a picnic, where the children lined up to collect some food (such as grapes, cheese and juice) which was served by the monitrices. The most challenging part of the event was not speaking English throughout the whole afternoon, which we found especially hard since the children were not always sure what we were saying! Even so, they really enjoyed it and we could tell that they were having a great time. One of the things that made it even more enjoyable was how it felt like a fun gathering rather than an educational activity. Overall, it was a very successful afternoon, and us French leaders got to enjoy our own picnic the following day!
