“Is There A Natural Solution To Treating My Injuries? ” Physical Therapy Can Help YOU To Avoid Surgery After A Sports Injury

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. For many people, playing sports is a fun way to burn extra calories, socialize, and get fit. Unfortunately, this also means the occasional sports injury or a flare up of an old injury or condition. You don’t have to be a professional or even an amateur athlete to suffer a sports injury. In fact, many times, those most susceptible to sports injuries are people who have just started exercising or participate on a recreational level. Sports injuries in this article will be defined as injuries to the musculoskeletal system, includingmuscles, bones and tissues such as cartilage. The most common sports injuries include:

Physical Therapy Can Help YOU To Avoid Surgery After A Sports Injury

SPRAINS: A sprain occurs when the connective tissue that joins the end of the bone with another is stretched or torn. Those connective tissues are known as ligaments. Sprains are caused by trauma such as a fall or blow to the body that knocks a joint out of position. Ankles, knees and wrists are most vulnerable to sprains. However, back, neck and shoulder sprains are very common too. STRAINS: A strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is pulled, torn or twisted. Strains are non-contact injuries, such as those that occur from overstretching. A common example of a strain is a muscle spasm. A back or neck strain is a very common injury treated in physical therapy. KNEE INJURIES: According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the knee is the most commonly injured joint. Orthopedic surgeons see more than 5.5 million people annually for knee injuries, which can include runner’s knee (pain or tenderness close to the knee cap at the front side of the knee), tendonitis and iliotibial band syndrome (pain on the outer side of the knee). Severe knee injuries often include bone bruises or damage to the cartilage or ligaments. SHIN SPLINTS: Shin splints occur when there is a pain along the large bone in the front of the lower leg, known as the tibia or shin bone. Shin splints most commonly occur in runners, especially those who are just starting a running program. This is usually due to poor alignment of the body, or weakness in the leg muscles. The team at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy Specialists can treat many orthopedic and repetitive motion injuries without the need for invasive surgeries or medications. In fact, most doctors have their patients try physical therapy first before recommending any other procedures. The licensed physical therapists at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy Specialists can customize a program that addresses the weakness of your particular musculoskeletal system, allowing you to recover quickly and remain active. Even if you have an old injury, it is important to have it evaluated by our physical therapists to prevent long-term damage like arthritis. If you have sports or orthopedic injuries like tendonitis, arthritis, a stress fracture or low back pain, our therapists can design a treatment plan to promote improved function, wellness and minimize the risk of re-injury.

Patient Success Story

After my first 2 weeks…my pain had improved tremendously!

“Before I started Physical Therapy, I was in really bad shape, for nearly 2 years. The severe pain in my back and leg made it difficult to walk, let alone kayak, bike, and work around the house and garage. I am a very active individual and was hardly able to do anything because of the compression of the nerves in my back. I was diagnosed with stenosis of my spine. Surgery was recommended to resolve the problem, but I wanted to avoid surgery and had heard of some very successful stories from people with my same condition who had gone to physical therapy. I began working with Nick at Mid-Michigan Physical Therapy Specialists. At the first visit he performed a very thorough physical examination, and described what were some of the contributing factors that affected the space for the nerves in my back. I was encouraged by the hands on approach that we would be taking. Some of the first few stretches and sessions provided immediate relief. After the first 2 weeks of working with Nick, my pain had improved tremendously and I was able to walk with much less pain and more confidence. We soon began accelerating the exercises, strengthening my core, and working on activities that I needed to get back to lifting, biking and kayaking. Over the course of the next 2 months I was back to working on my house, exercising at a high level, and my pain was no longer affecting my life. “After more than 2 years of 24 hour pain, I was contemplating surgery. I have made more progress than I believed possible. I am so glad I found Mid-Michigan PT, while I would readily recommend Mid-Michigan PT as the first thing you do to get yourself back to enjoying pain-free living.” - John H. www.midmichiganpt.com

Our Fowlerville Clinic Now Looks Like ‘NEW’!

For those of you, that are acquaintedwith our Fowlerville clinic, you know that it is located downtown Fowlerville in a not so new building! Before, we took over this space a few years ago it had been among other things Woods Drug Store, Howard’s Market, Dunny’s Party Store and a Curves Fitness Studio. This past year however, we decided we needed to do some major renovations to improve it’s ‘look’ and functionality for our patients. Like most construction projects, the process dragged out as we worked on our plans, obtained permits and in turn selected a contractor, while the project finally started in January! Thanks to lots of hard work and coordination, Danco Construction completed the project (start to finish) over three 3 day weekends and earned themselves a 5 Star Rating, while our patients can now enjoy a much more spacious gym to exercise with a view!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY RECIPE: Green Rice Crispy Treats

6 INGREDIENTS • 6 Cups Puffed Rice Cereal (divided into three 2 cup portions) • 6 Cups Miniature Marshmallows (divided into three 2 cup portions) • 6 Tablespoons Butter (divided into three 2 tablespoon portions) • 1/2 tsp McCormick Vanilla Extract • 1/4 tsp McCormick Peppermint Extract • McCormick Green Food Coloring

DIRECTIONS Prepare a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups miniature marshmallows and 2 tablespoons butter, melt over low heat and stir until well combined. Remove from heat and add in 1/4 tsp vanilla extract and a few drops of green food coloring. This will be your lightest colored layer, so a nice light shade of green works great. Combine melted mixture with two cups of puffed rice cereal and stir well. Pour and press onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat process for following two layers, adding in 1/4 tsp of peppermint extract in place of vanilla extract to your middle layer if desired. For each layer, you will want to create a darker shade of green with your food coloring. Press each layer on top of the previous layer. Allow to cool.
