Coaching Clinic History

The 78th Annual North Carolina Coaching Clinic continues a strong tradition of service to the state’s scholastic coaches with a program featuring outstanding clinicians in nine sports. Over 264,000 coaches have attended the clinic since Bob Jamieson, athletic director and coach at Greensboro Senior High (now Grimsley), and Smith Barrier, sports editor of the Greensboro Daily News, inaugurated the event in 1949. The clinic was first held in 1949 at Rosenthal Gymnasium on the Women’s College (now UNCG) campus. It was moved to the present First Horizon Coliseum (previously Greensboro Coliseum) site in 1960. Bob Knight of Army spoke on basketball. 1971 (1,687) — Chuck Fairbanks, Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson of Oklahoma, football, Jack Kraft of Villanova and Morgan Wootten of DeMatha High School, basketball. Dr. LeRoy Walker returned for track after appearing in 1968. 1972 (1,729) — John McKay, Dave Levy and Craig Fertig of Southern California, football, Abe Lemons of Oklahoma City, basketball. 1973 (1,884) – Bob Knight of Indiana and Morgan Wootten of DeMatha High returned for basketball after appearing in ‘70 and ‘71, respectively. Al Buehler of Duke spoke on track for second time after ‘69 visit. 1974 (2,068) — Registration eclipsed the 2,000 mark for the first time. Johnny Majors, Jackie Sherrill and Joe Madden of Pittsburgh, Eddie Robinson of Grambling, football, Norm Sloan of N.C. State, Dave Gavitt of Providence, basketball, Allen Morris of Greensboro, tennis, Marilyn Gibbs of UNCG, girls’ basketball and field hockey, Marvin Allen of UNC Chapel Hill, soccer. Dr. LeRoy Walker of N.C. Central made a third visit for track. Charlie Adams of NCHSAA made first of 11 appearances to speak on rule changes. 1975 (2,393) – Women became full-fledged members. Morgan Wootten of DeMatha High made third appearance for basketball, along with Kay Yow of N.C. State and George Lehmann, former pro player. Dr. LeRoy Walker made fourth visit for track. 1976 (2,436) — Vince Dooley, Bill Pace and Erk Russell of Georgia, George Welsh of U.S. Naval Academy, football, Lou Carnesecca of St. John’s, basketball, along with George Lehmann in return appearance from ‘75. Al Buehler of Duke made 3rd visit for track and Ellen Griffin of Greensboro,golf.

1977 (2,474) — Lou Holtz, Monte Kiffin and Larry Beightol of Arkansas, Jerry Claiborne of Maryland, football, Dean Smith, Bill Guthridge and Eddie Fogler of UNC Chapel Hill, Billy Packer of Winston-Salem, basketball, Jim Cames of Florida, track. Ellen Griffin of Greensboro returned for golf. 1978 (2,544) — Bill Yeoman of Houston and Jim Carlen, South Carolina, football, Bill Foster, Bob Wenzel and Ray Jones, Duke, Jeff Mullins, former pro star, basketball, Dr. Herb Appenzeller, Guilford, legal aspects of sports. Ron Polk,Miss. State, baseball. 1979 (2,596) — Jackie Sherrill of Pittsburgh returned for football after ‘74 visit, along with Foge Fazio and Jimmy Sharpe, Jud Heathcote of Michigan State spoke on basketball, along with Morgan Wootten of DeMatha on his fourth appearance, Mari anne Stanley of Old Dominion and George Lehmann in third visit. 1980 (2,925) — Earle Bruce of Ohio State and Fred Akers of Texas, football, Larry Brown, Kevin O’Connor and Larry Farmer, UCLA, basketball.
