injustice and wrong invariably elicit from all high souls—“made a curse” ! ---Robert. G. Lee.* ‘ 20. The Witness That Is Needed “Return . . . , and show how great things God hath done unto thee” (Lk. 8:39). Think o f a man going baok to his old home with a sweetened temper! ’Think of a pessimist going back home shining with radiant hope! Or think of ,some fretful, complaining, spirit turning up one day clothed in the garments of praise! This is the witness which today is demanded more than anything else— the witness of men and women who have been renewed by Jesus. —J. H. Jowett. 21. Faith in His Presence “Lo, I am with you alway” (Matt. 28:20). We have not to try to grasp this fact as an intellectual conception, but simply to recollect it amid the day’s occupations and pursuits—to pause a moment, just to remind ourselves that God is, and that we are in His presence. . , . Let us form the habit of seeking always His counsel about every step in life, and of turning from all the rude storms that sometimes break upon i^s, to the safe shelter of His love.—W. H. 22. Spoiled for the World “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established” (Prov. 4:26). Beware of going to places where Christ is disallowed. Do you not think it argues very badly for Christianity when a believer fancies it needful to go down to the world’s level to get an hour or two of enjoyment? Rather, let world lings see that our joy ifa Christ is so much superior to what they have that we are spoiled for anything besides. —Franklin Ferguson. 28. Strengthened by Truth “ Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth’-* (Eph. 6:14). If you tell the truth, you have infinite power supporting you; but if not, you have definite power against you. The children of kings should be above all deceit, for they have a mighty and g jealous Protector. . . . We may for a time seem to humbug men, but not God. . . Oh, be open in all your ways! You will have a girdle around your loins, strengthening you in all your wayfarings.—“ Chinese” Gordon. 24. Desiring His Word . “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word” (Psa. 119:16). It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment *Reprinted from “Calvarg” by special per mission of Zondervan Pub. purposes of grace those things which men- despise, we need not mind the taunt of the “uncircumcised.” There is a fit ness in these things. Flesh must not glory in the Lord’s presence. . . . Your smallness can never be a hindrance to God, but self-sufficiency always is. —Franklin Fergiison. 16. A Sanctified Spirit “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:23). A sanctified spirit is a dedicated spirit. . . . This act of dedication should be made once for all, and then recog nized as done and as including every subsequent act which we may ever renew as we receive more light. . . . It is possible for us, once for all and not knowing perhaps one thousandth part of all that it means, to give ourselves to God for all that He understands it to mean.—A. B. Simpson. 17. What the Hand Finds to Do “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Eccl. 9:10). With all our faults, God loves us if we are trusting in His Son. . . . Though the cart creaks, it will get home with its load; and the old horse, broken-kneed as he is, will do a sight of work yet. There is no use lying down and doing nothing, because we cannot do every thing as we like. Faults or no faults, ploughing must be done, and imperfect people must do it, too, or .there will be no harvest next year.—John Ploughman. 18. Two Masters “No man can serve two masters” (Matt. 6:24); Many things automatically cancel each other. Often we want to enjoy two exclusive things: worldly pleasure and a clear conscience or true godliness; idle love of ease and success; the ap proval of heaven and earthly fame; self - gratification and perfect health; selfishness and true happiness. These are all, contrary and Inconsistent with each other. We must choose one or the other. “Ye cannot serve God and Mam mon”—CANNOT! Like water and oil, they cannot mix! —William E. Booth-Clibbom. 19. “Made a Curse” “ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us” (Gal. 3:13). We pitch our mental tents on this verse; we gather our hearts’ medita tions about this statement, as those who approach a holy-white sanctuary where unanointed ;et cannot walk! “Made a curse for us!” Jesus, so finely strung, so unutterably keyed to truth, mercy, justice, love, quickly feeling the sorrow, sympathy, and. indignation which
