Golf Course Reminders

The Senior Men’s Golf Organization (SMGO) invites all ANCC members age 55 and over to participate in our men’s senior golf program in 2018 regardless of handicap. This is organized play that develops new frienships and enhances your enjoyment of the game of golf and Club facilities. The SMGO program features an ABCD scramble at 8:30 AM on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the ARL course commencing in April through October. Other tournaments may be scheduled. If you were a member in 2017, your membership will be renewed. Sign-ups will be posted in the ARL Golf Shop by December 1, 2017. If you do not want to participate in 2018, please indicate your decision to be deleted on the sign-up sheet or you may contact Peter Junghans at pjunghans@aol.com or (703) 836-7966. New members who may be leaving the area for the winter are encouraged to sign-up prior to departing. The 2018 dues will be set prior to the opening of the season. Dues cover the cost of the lunch in the Clubhouse at the completion of each of the 14 ABCD Scrambles...best deal in town! Standard cart fees are charged for each event. A $10 entry fee is collected at each event for the prize pool, a dues augmentation and for the cost of coffee and pastries at each ABCD Scramble check-in. In 2009, the VSGA adopted a new handicap revision schedule and active season dates. Virginia no longer observes an inactive season allowing instead for year- round posting. Handicap index revisions will take place on the 1st and 15th of each month throughout the winter months. However, course conditions will dictate when scores can be posted and will be posted in the Golf Shops. Year-Round Handicap Posting

•The water/ice machines and drinking fountains at both courses will be winterized and closed until approximately March 15, 2018. •The restroom at White #3 and #7 at Arlington will remain open through the winter months.

•The restrooms at Red #4 at Fairfax will be open whenever the golf courses are open.

WGO-18 WOMEN’S 18- HOLE GOLF ORGANIZATION

At our Fall Luncheon we honored Nancy Graves (90) and Bobbie Davidson (93). Both past presidents, they have been champion golfers in WGO-18 and more. They have been playing golf more than 70 years, mostly at ANCC, and hope to “hit their age” in 2018. We treasure their contributions and their friendship. New officers were also elected, headed by President Pam Quinn. This holiday season WGO-18 sponsored 25 children from DC’s General Homeless Shelter in Northeast, a shelter bursting with 250 families. Each “adopted” child received warm clothes, toys, and books. We hope our efforts will make their holiday brighter, merrier, and full of hope. Although January is a month of no organized play, Winter Golf is ongoing for those who wish to play. A description and rules in the WGO-18 Booklet can be viewed here . New members are welcome at any time during the year. Please contact Susan Walthall, Membership Chair, at susan.walthall@aol.com . For more information, click here to view the WGO-18 website.

Winter Golf Course Set Up

2018 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA)

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting on 8 November 2011. Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and remain in effect until approximately 1 March each eason. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole – one forward and one back. In many cases artifi- cial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing condi- tions during the golf season, March through October.

Don’t miss out on a great experience of playing local country club courses. If you are 55 or older, you can become a member of the NVRMGA and do just that! ANCC will field two separate teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2010 and 2015 and the ANCC Arlington and Fairfax teams were co-champions in 2011. In 2017, the ARL team was again crowned League Champion! And the FFX team finished in a tie for sixth place. Both teams are looking forward to successful seasons in 2018. The 2018 ANCC teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up. HOW? Just sign up here before 31 January 2018 for the ARL Team and here by 1 March 2018 for the FFX Team or by visiting the NVRMGA page under Golf Organizations. Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again this year. A contact list will be posted on the golf bulletin board in each ANCC pro shop whereby eligible ANCC golfers not currently part of a team, but wishing to join us in 2018, can express interest. How does NVRMGA work? New in 2018, the League will be organized into 3 regions - Eastern, Central and Western with ARL in the Eastern and FFX in the Central. We will play each of 10 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away between early April and late September. The League Champion will be determined by a four-team playoff (three region champions and one wildcard team) during the first two weeks of October. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:45 AM. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in 5 or 6 matches and have the opportunity to volunteer as a substitute for matches to which you are not assigned. A schedule will be available in early February for ARL and early March for FFX indicating which matches you have been assigned. These are handicap matches - no need to worry about your current handicap index. If you would like more information for ARL , please contact Mike Downs (703) 317-1822 mpdx2@hotmail.com Nick Fritz (703) 553-4435 nhfritz@verizon.net Jim Schroeder (703) 237-1939 jms.3821@verizon.net For FFX information, please contact Verne Wattawa (703) 433-9279 vwandww@verizon.net Rich Barkell (703) 442-0932 rbarkell@cox.net Mike Golembieski (703) 643-1444 mpgolem@cox.net Please sign-up as soon as possible!

A glebe was a piece of public land set aside in colonial times for the support of the established Anglican Church. According to the website “Ghosts of DC” (ghostsofdc.org,) “(Glebe Road) dates back to at least the mid-18th cen- tury and initially was known as the “Road to the Falls” taking travelers from Alexandria to Great Falls. The road also linked the glebe lands of The Falls Church and Christ Church and eventually became known as Glebe Road.” At the time ANCC was founded, the route of Glebe Road made two 90 degree turns along the southern boundary of our property, essentially following today’s 24th Road South and Shirlington Road. In 1949, the Club lost 4.597 acres to facilitate the straightening of Glebe Road. This land condemnation resulted changes to holes #15 and #16 (today’s White #6 and White #7).
