PATIENT OF THE MONTH! Meet our patient of the month Edward Wajvoda! Ed joined our OBTS family after attending a consultation with our therapist for his back. He has had therapy two times before for his back, but unfortunately his pain returned. After seeing our ads, Ed thought our clinic would be able to help relieve his pain. Ed is a retired electrical engineer, who looked forward to building a large model railroad and working in the garden during his free time. Unfortunately, his sciatica pain returned leaving him with pain while standing and bending. After three weeks of therapy, Ed can stand longer and has increased flexibility! Ed states his time at Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists has been fantastic and he enjoys feeling like he is a friend and not a client! Ed has responded awesome with his personalized treatment and looks forward to completing his railroad model and returning to the garden! Ed has chosen a charity close to his heart, Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. His wife Rose has Multiple Sclerosis and their family had gained an understanding of the condition from the help at MSAA. Being Grateful is Good For You! GRATITUDE AND HEALTH

Feeling thankful can improve your health in both direct and indirect ways. Some research shows that the experience of gratitude can induce a sense of relaxation, improve the immune system, and decrease blood pressure. But grateful people also tend to cultivate better health habits, like eating more nutritious food, exercising, and avoiding risky behaviors. In addition, the optimism that stems from gratitude can create a healing attitude: research shows that people with optimistic attitudes have better outcomes after medical procedures. GRATITUDE AND JOY Robert Emmons, an internationally renowned scientific expert on gratitude, has found that acknowledging the good in life has a tendency to amplify positive emotions, such as joy and contentment, because it helps us slow down. “I think gratitude allows us to participate more in life,” he says. “We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life.” Consider the last time you had a good cup of coffee—did you pay attention to the warmth of the cup on your hands, or the feeling of pleasure as you took the first sip? It’s easy to ignore these small moments of positivity in our day as we rush from one activity to another, but stopping to appreciate them makes them more powurful.

GRATITUDE AND RESILIENCE Practicing gratitude can also make you better equipped to handle the difficulties of life that inevitably arise. In fact, according to Emmons, it’s an essential part of the process of healing from trauma. Even despair can be mitigated by the experience of appreciation for the good, however slight it might be. Many survivors of the Holocaust, when asked to tell their stories, remember most strongly the feelings of gratitude for food, shelter, or clothing that was offered to them. This sense of thankfulness for the small blessings helped them maintain their humanity despite experiencing a horrific tragedy. Many people with life-threatening illnesses also report decreased distress and increased positive emotions when they practice gratitude. Recent MRI studies have mapped the gratitude circuitry in the brain, which activates a sense of reward, fairness, and decision-making— all aspects that help facilitate survival and post-traumatic growth.

Cause #2: Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis is the second most common cause of heel and foot pain. The pain can go up the back of the ankle when walking or running. It is an irritation of the Achilles tendon (the largest and strongest tendon in our body), a thick band of tissue along the back of the lower leg that connects the calf muscles to the heel. How do you know if you have Achilles tendonitis? There will be: • Tenderness in the heel or higher up in the Achilles tendon

• Tightness in the ankle • Tightness in the calf • Swelling in the back of the ankle • Pain in the back of the heel when walking or running

Top 2 Most Common Causes of Heel and Foot Pain

Dear Valued Client, Thanksgiving Day and the holiday season is upon us. What a great time to spend with family and friends…great dinner meals… board games… watching football…just spending time together. But the holidays also mean being up on your feet a lot…running errands…shopping…cooking…preparing for the big day. Unfortunately, heel and foot pain can derail your best laid holiday plans. Heel and foot pain is no joke… …it can be so debilitating you dread getting out of bed in the morning. …it can get embarrassing with the way you walk… you start getting curious glances from people. …frustrating and maddening…it makes getting through your daily life such a bear. Cause #1: Plantar Fasciitis Plantar fasciitis (say “PLAN-ter fash-ee-EYE-tus”) is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue (ligament) that connects your heel bone to your toes. It supports the arch of your foot. If you strain your plantar fascia, it gets weak, swollen, and irritated (inflamed). How do you know if you have plantar fasciitis? • Stabbing pain on the bottom of your heel • Sensation of tightness and/or tenderness along your arch • Pain in the morning, when stepping out of bed and taking the first steps of the day - with prolonged standing - when standing up after sitting for awhile - when walking barefoot or in shoes with poor support Sufferers of this cause usually have pain with changing positions such as getting in and out of a car…or rolling in bed…or getting in and out of bed. Sitting or driving is usually a problem…and one leg can feel “heavier” than the other. Sufferers with this cause can even experience groin pain and trouble controlling their bladder (even at a young age).
