With the integrateds having fought it out to secure market share at the top of the “food chain,” larger independents are now duking it out in what seems
SupplyOne Acquires Romanow Container
Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, based Sup- plyOne, Inc., one of the largest independent suppliers of corrugated and other value-add- ed packaging products, equipment, and ser- vices in the U.S., announced that it acquired Romanow Container, a privately-held manu- facturer of corrugated products and protec- tive packaging, and distributor of industrial packaging supplies headquartered in West- wood, Massachusetts. Romanow Container was founded in 1948 by Allan Romanow as a corrugated convert- ing operation. Since then, the company has invested in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and complemented its offering with custom polyethylene and polyurethane foam fabrication, wood crating and pallets, packag- ing supplies and services that include pack- aging design and testing, and inventory man- agement. Today, the company is a packaging manufacturer and distributor recognized for the value and exceptional service they deliver to its New England customer base. “We share a customer-focused philosophy with SupplyOne, and it is core to all we do,” said Ted Romanow, President of Romanow

Rohrer Corporation Acquires Jay Packaging Group In RI
Wadsworth, Ohio based Rohrer Corporation, a retail-pack- aging designer and manufacturer, last week announced that it closed on the acquisition of Jay Packaging Group, a premier specialty printing and thermoforming company. The addition of Jay Packaging Group to Rohrer strength- ens the combined capabilities of both companies in the areas of high-end printing and decorating, carded blister, thermoformed, and folded carton packaging. Jay Packaging Group is based in Warwick, Rhode Is- land. Since its founding in 1945, it has grown into one of the industry’s most creative package design, enhance- ment, and solutions companies in the Northeast for print- ing, folding cartons, and plastic components. Jay Packag- ing Group serves a variety of industries, including niche packaging for the beauty, luxe, home and health markets. “Jay Packaging Group is an innovative company with talented employees. Kampack To Relocate Headquarters, Expanding In Henry County, GA The Henry County Development Authority announced Fri- day that Kampack, a division of National Packaging Group, will relocate its company headquarters and expand its operations into Henry County with a new manufacturing facility in the King Mill Distribution Industrial Park. The new facility will create 120 new jobs and $35 million in invest- ment, according to HCDA officials. The new facility will help the company produce packaging products to supply customers in the Southeast. “We are excited to expand into Henry County with our new manufacturing facility to better serve our customers in the Southeast, while taking advantage of the area’s strong business growth to build our business. AICC Offers Members Plant Tours With Packaging Xperience In March AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is offering members the opportunity participate in two plant tours during the Packaging Xperience, March 1-3, in Kansas City, Missouri. The first tour will be conducted at the Lawrence Paper Company (LPCO) in Lawrence, Kansas. Now in its 5th gen- eration of family ownership LPCO serves its customers with some of the most technically advanced machinery in the industry. ISM: Economic Improvement To Continue In U.S. In 2022
the second half (H2) of the year is projected to cool slightly in manufacturing and accelerate in services. These projections are part of the forecast issued by the Business Survey Committee of Institute for Supply Man- agement (ISM). The forecast was released by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M, Chair of the ISM Manufacturing Busi- ness Survey Committee, and by Anthony S. Nieves, CPSM, C.P.M., A.P.P, CFPM, Chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee. Manufacturing Summary Expectations for 2022 are positive, as 65 percent of survey respondents expect revenues to be greater in 2022 than in 2021. The panel of purchasing and supply executives expects a 6.5-percent net increase in overall revenues for 2022, compared to a 14.1-percent increase reported for 2021. Fifteen of the 18 manufacturing indus- tries expect revenue improvement in 2022 “Manufacturing’s purchasing and supply executives

This expansion will continue a growth trend that began in June 2020, as indicated in the monthly ISM Report On Business. Revenues are expected to increase in 15 of 18 manu- facturing industries and 17 of 18 services-sector indus- tries. Capital expenditures are expected to increase by 7.7 percent in the manufacturing sector (after a 12.1 per- cent increase in 2021) and increase by 10.3 percent in the services sector. The manufacturing employment base is expected to grow by 1 percent following an increase of 3.3 percent in 2021. Compared to the first half (H1), growth in

Purchasing and supply execu- tives predict that capital expenditures will increase by 7.7 percent in 2022 over 2021, compared to the 12.1 percent increase re- ported for 2021 over 2020. Manufacturers expect employment in the sector to grow by one percent in 2022 relative to December 2021 levels, while labor and benefit costs are expected to increase an average of 4.7 percent. Respondents also expect the U.S. dollar to weaken against six of the sev- en currencies of major trading partners in 2022; it is expected to strengthen relative to the Mexican peso. The panel predicts that prices paid for raw materials will increase 8.2 percent

during the first five months of the year, with an overall in- crease of 8.1 percent for 2022. This compares to a report- ed 14.5 percent increase in raw materials prices between the end of 2020 and November of 2021. Employment ISM’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee mem- bers report that sector employment increased 3.3 percent in 2021 and forecast that employment will increase by one percent, on average, for the full year of 2022. Thirty-six percent of respondents expect employment to be, on av- erage, 10.3 percent higher in 2022, while 24 percent pre- dict employment to be lower by an average of 11.2 percent. The remaining 40 percent of respondents expect their em- ployment levels to be unchanged in 2022. Capital Expenditures Purchasing and supply executives report 2021 capital expenditures increased 12.1 percent on average when compared to 2020 levels. Expenditures for 2021 beat sur- vey respondents’ previous expectations, as they predicted an increase of 8.7 percent for 2021 in May 2021. The 42 percent of purchasers who reported increased capital ex- penditures in 2021 indicated an average increase of 37.8 percent, while the 12 percent who said their capital spend- ing was reduced reported an average decrease of 29.3 percent. Forty-six percent of respondents said their levels of spend were unchanged in 2021.

Behavioral Science Research Explores Role Of Consumers’ Commitment To Recycling To better understand how to improve recycling, in particular how to get more consumers to recycle their food and beverage cartons, the Carton Council of North America recently commissioned a behavioral science study which identified factors that play into recycling decisions. Some of these factors are logistical, such as having the tools neces- sary to recycle, like a container or location to store recyclables in the kitchen. Others are more psychological and include things like judging whether others recycle; following social norms surrounding recycling; encouraging others in the household to recycle; and feeling positive about being a good neighbor and citizen for recycling. “By studying how people make decisions and change their behaviors in real life, the Carton Council hopes to unlock new insights which can be leveraged to nudge people to increase the recycling of their food and beverage cartons,” said Carla Fantoni, vice president of communications for the Carton Council and vice president, communications operations for Tetra Pak. “While availability and the means to recycle, is the most influential el- ement in terms of initiating recycling,” said Fantoni. “The study revealed that psychological factors cannot be overlooked and play an important role in making recycling a habit.” “The Carton Council looks forward to sharing more on the findings in the near future as well as incorporating them into communications efforts moving forward,” said Fantoni. Since forming in 2009, consumer education is a significant part of the Carton Council’s commitment to improving food and beverage car- ton recycling in the U.S. This includes providing marketing materials for communities to ensure residents know about carton recycling, as well as funding campaigns that strive to inform and motivate individuals to recy- cle their cartons. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
