M intel has released a new study entitled Global Packaging Trends 2020 that looks at a number of areas packaging com- panies and brands should be focused upon, one of which is re-

cycling. Mintel believes pack- aging manufacturers and brands must continue to de- velop and commercialize re- cyclable package innovations even if the capabilities to re- cycle them do not yet exist. Over the past decade,many have become familiar with the mantra ‘reduce, reuse, re- cycle’, but it tells an incom- plete story. It’s hard to recy- cle if consumers aren’t first reminded to ‘return’ packag- ing to the proper recycling bin or store take-back system. According to many reports, the demand for recycled plas- tics today far outstrips supply.

If the 2025 and 2030 commitments companies and brands have made to reach 100 percent recycled content are to be met, new and rapidly scalable recycling and processing technologies must be conceived, commercialised, implemented, and promoted.With just 9 percent of the world’s plastic waste actually being recycled, according to 2018 research from the United Nations, there is a dire need to explore technologies that are ‘technically’ recyclable now, and for the development of plastic alternatives.

Paper-based flexible packaging gains ground : Nestlé has been at the forefront of the development and commercialisation of recyclable paper-based flexi- ble packaging. In 2019, it introduced Nesquik All Natu- ral in five European markets, KitKat in Japan, and YES! bars in Europe, all in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recyclable paper flexible packaging, alternatives to non-recyclable plastic films. Tubes squeezing their way into the recycling bin : Tubes are typically made from sheets of plastic lam- inates, can include a thin layer of aluminum, and are pressed into a single, nonrecyclable structure. Slated to roll out in 2020, Colgate’s recyclable tube is con- structed of multiple grades of high-density polyeth- ylene (HDPE), a widely recycled plastic. The natural soda deodorant stick from Denmark-based Ben&Anna is a solid bar deodorant that retails in a paperboard tube and carries a ‘no plastic’ logo. The Bottom Line On Plastic Recycling Deal with the issue : Despite the world’s wishes, sin- gle-use plastic will exist for decades to come. Retailers, brands, package manufacturers, and consumers must embrace recycling as a primary means of responsibly dealing with not just single-use plastics,but all types of plastics and all types of packaging. Do your part in finding a solution : Retailers, brands, and package manufacturers must all do more to pro- mote recycling — starting with on-pack messaging and education. Don’t wait : It is imperative to develop and commercial- ize packaging technologies today that are ahead of their ability to be recycled, rather than the other way around. Packaging Reset ‘Sustainable’ packaging will be supplanted by ‘re- sponsible’ packaging - a practical approach brands can promote and defend, and consumers can understand and act on. Next-generation alternatives to fossil fuel-based tech- nologies are not always the more environmentally re- sponsible choice — especially when there are many ‘re- sponsible’packaging solutions available and no one right answer. Brands and packaging manufacturers need to ex- plore all options to find the more responsible choice for the application, occasion, and moment in time. Some sustainability approaches, like blanket plastics bans, can cause unintended consequences that may

CCL Industries Acquires Clinical Systems

CCL Industries Inc. has acquired Clinical Systems, Inc (“CSI”), a specialized provider to the United States clin- ical trials industry. CSI, a label producer based in Garden City,NewYork, USA, specializes in patient information booklets and has developed a new software driven “eLabel” prod- uct for clinical trials providers.The enterprise value of the transaction, net of cash and debt, is approximately $19.4 million. Sales for the 12 months ending Decem- ber 31, 2019, are approximately $14.4 million with an estimated adjusted EBITDA of $3.5 million. CSI will be integrated into CCL Label’s Healthcare & Specialty operations and immediately begin trading as CCL Clinical Systems. Avery Dennison is planning for the future growth of RFID. Just months after signing a deal to acquire Smar- trac’s transponder division, the company will open an RFID manufacturing facility in Brazil in 2021. The move marks Avery Dennison’s first manufacturing fa- cility in Brazil and fifth in the world.The new factory will be located in Vinhedo. Following the completion of the Smartrac acqui- sition, the company’s RFID business will represent a global platform with more than $500 million in reve- nue.The new facility in Brazil will manufacture a wide variety of inlay designs. Total packaging industry deals for the fourth quarter of 2019 were worth $2.73 billion, according to Global- Data’s deals database. The value marked an increase of 17.2 percent over the previous quarter and a drop of 58.3 percent when compared with the last fourth-quarter average of $6.55 billion. In terms of number of deals, the sector saw a drop of 7.8 percent over the last fourth-quarter average with 83 deals against the average of 90 deals. In value terms,Asia-Pacific led the activity with deals worth $1.91 billion. The top five packaging deals accounted for 88.5 per- cent of the overall value during Q4 2019. The combined value of the top five packaging deals stood at $2.41 billion, against the overall value of $2.73 billion recorded for the month. Flexo Wash Technology Helps Flexo-Graphics Grow As Flexo-Graphics, Butler, Wisconsin, grew and ex- panded, the need to clean its aniloxes effectively grew and expanded as well. Their problem was that the method of cleaning the company used to clean its an- iloxes “broke down too often and too fast.” The company did a demo of its dirty anilox rolls in a FlexoWash anilox cleaner and found its rolls“were not nearly as clean” as they thought they were, according to JohnWitmer, Operations Manager. In 2017, the company purchased its first anilox clean- er, a FlexoWash Handy 2x2. It could clean four rolls at a time with a much shorter turnaround time of 15-20 minutes maximum (sometimes only 10 minutes using the QuickWash). Improving The Process In 2018, the company purchased a new press, which was a 17-inch press with 10 colors. This new press taxed its ability to keep everything clean. Flexo-Graph- ics went from a negligible use of UV Ink to using UV Ink 50 percent of the time, in just three short years. The improvements in their system were evident.“We spent far less time at the sink which resulted in more time running the press,”said Tim McDonough, Presi- dent.“In addition, clean rolls led to more repeatable col- or and tones which is critical in a highly repetitive busi- ness. Our ability to easily hit color led to more press up time due to less time spent dialing in color or changing anilox rolls. Prior to Flexo Wash it was not uncommon for us to run up a job with a “clean” anilox only to see that color was lacking and that we need to give the an- ilox another cycle to try to get it cleaner. Now a roller is either clean or it is not. There no longer is almost clean.” Here are some statistics of the company’s results: • Flexo-Graphics prints 250 days a year. • Flexo-Graphics used to spend 10 minutes prepping each roll and then one hour cleaning in the old system. After the cleaning, it would rinse the roll again. • Now the company spends about five minutes to load and unload four rolls into the Flexo Wash unit. The cleaning process takes 15 to 20 minutes. • Upgrading to the Flexo Wash system took Flexo-Graphics from two rolls per hour cleaning ca- pacity to a potential of 12 to 16 rolls an hour. • Cleaning supply cost was $1720 a year. The first year with Flexo Wash system, the cost was $1520, but the company cleaned four times more anilox rolls. • Cleaner rolls have improved their print quality. In 2019, the Flexo Wash Anilox Cleaner and 18 months later Flexo-Graphic purchased the FlexoWash PartsWasher, a PK 200WR.

Ellis Increases Output With Koenig & Bauer Die Cutter At the modern two-story facility for Canadian pack- aging specialist Ellis Packaging, a member of the Ellis Group, a wide variety of product formats run through the 85,000-square-foot plant on a daily basis to meet the needs of the food, confectionary, liquor, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. “Our customers demand short turnaround,” said Cath- ie Ellis, president, who oversees the business along with her brother Dave among three facilities.“To provide that level of quality service,we’ve invested nearly $15 million in new equipment. Most recently, we added our fourth high-speed Koenig & Bauer-Iberica die cutter here at our Pickering facility. Since the installation, we’ve seen our net output,which factors in press speed,makeready times, and down time, improve by a 25-30 percent. Due to the significant improvement in our productivity,we’ve seen a major increase in the amount of savings because we’re not running the die cutters in overtime.” The Optima 106 K’s features contribute to reduced makeready times and lower operating costs, according to Ellis. Some of Ellis’s products require very efficient setup times to be cost effective, she explains, and the pneumatically actuated quick lock system for locking up dies helps to reduce makeready times. In turn, she said, the die cutter helps to keep costs low on short run work. Conversely, Ellis has other customers and product formats where vendor managed inventory is part of its value proposition, and subsequently, those run quantities tend to be much longer where speed and press uptime is critical. For more than two decades Iberica die cutters have made major contributions to the growth at Ellis. Re- placing an existing Iberica die cutter presented min- imal learning curve to the staff.This fourth die cutter follows three new Koenig & Bauer-Iberica Optima 106 K 40-inch diecutters, two for Ellis Paper Box and one for Ellis Packaging. In fact, Ellis Mississauga was the first Iberica-Koenig & Bauer installation. Recently, Cathie Ellis was recognized for her leader- ship and named Printing Leader of theYear at the 14th annual Canadian Printing Awards, organized by Prin- tAction and its parent companyAnnex Business Media. She has worked for the family business dating back to its early days in the 1980s. Over the past 30 years, she has performed many jobs throughout the operation and rose through the company, officially taking the reins from her father Bill in 2010 as President.
