THE LESSONS MY MOM TAUGHT ME

When it comes to moms, they don’t get much better than mine, and I cannot think of someone as deserving of recognition as her.

I was the middle son of three boys, and my mom essentially raised us on her own. My parents divorced when I was young, and my mom continued to work a full-time job while caring for my brothers and me. I have a ton of respect for her and everything she sacrificed to give us a better life. And her hard work has paid off! Today, my brothers and I all enjoy successful careers and are establishing our own families. We never would have been able to do that if it hadn’t been for our mom. There are so many memories of my mom that I could share in honor of Mother’s Day this May, but one thing that always sticks out in my mind is our Christmases together. My mom loves Christmas, and her house is always decorated with every garland, knickknack, and holiday item she can find. (She’s big on decorating for other holidays, too!) I can still remember dreading the day after Christmas because I knew Dec. 26 would mean we had to take down all the decor. The day was spent tearing down ornaments and shuffling tubs around the house. But for the weeks the decor remained up, it was magical. I guess that made it worth the dreaded Dec. 26. Today, my brothers and I have a pretty special relationship with our mom. She’s the one who taught us the value of hard work, persistence, and independence. We always knew we had to work to get what we wanted and create the lives we desired. My mom had to do that every day of her life, and she was always appreciative of it. I’ve tried to follow suit. She set a good example for me.

grandchildren for years now, and ever since my brother welcomed my niece into the world in February 2019, she’s been bugging Maria and me about when she can expect our bundle of joy! I thought her desire for grandchildren would slow down after the first one, but if anything, it’s ignited that fire even more! (Sorry, Mom.) Every Mother’s Day, my brothers and I try to spend time with our mom. What that looks like changes from year to year, but it’s always fun whenever we can get together. It’s been pretty special the past few years, now that we all have our own significant others and there’s a baby in the mix. Regardless of what we do, when we do it, or how we do it, as long as my mom knows we appreciate her, that’s all that matters. As we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, I encourage you to find ways to honor your mom. The past few weeks have been so uncertain and fearful for most of us, but one of the best things we can do during these times is to come together and celebrate the good things in our lives, like our moms. I’m proud to help others and work hard each day — just like my mom has done for years. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! Thank you for setting a great example for your boys.

Now that my mom is enjoying her new role as a grandma, I’m curious to see what lessons she will have for the next generation. She’s been wanting

Health Benefits of Family Gardening

Give Your Kid the Gift of a Green Thumb Springtime often means nicer weather and more time spent outside, but it also means it’s gardening season. That means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and play in the dirt. If you’ve been searching for a way to get the kids away from technology and engaged with the real world, gardening is the perfect activity for the whole family to enjoy. Not only is it fun, but it’s also beneficial for your kids’ development. For example, gardening can improve your children’s analytical abilities. As Dr. Wendy Matthews says, “Gardening exercises important reasoning, initiation, planning, and organization skills.” Furthermore, several studies, including one at Texas A&M University, suggest that gardening improves a child’s attitude toward fruits and vegetables and may make them more likely to choose them as snacks. Gardening helps kids identify with where their food is coming from, and nothing tastes better than a freshly picked strawberry or pea pod they grew themselves. Jack Gilbert, a scientist at the University of Chicago and a parent himself, and his co-author, Rob Knight, emphasize the health benefits of garden time in their book, “Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System.” The two found that exposure to different microbes, like those found in a garden, strengthens a child’s immune system and makes them less likely to develop allergies.

If this is your first time gardening, you don’t need much to get started. Grab a few shovels, a pair of gloves for each family member, and fresh potting soil, and you’ll be set. Then, you can decide together which plants you’d like to grow! Carrots are fun because of the surprise factor — just imagine your child discovering that the part they eat grows below the ground! Peas are tasty and fairly easy to grow, as are strawberries. The options really are endless. Depending on the growing season in your area, you can choose to buy seeds or opt for rooted plants.

Last but certainly not least, the best part of gardening as a family is the healthy, fresh produce you’ll get to enjoy all summer long!

“My reason for coming was to increase the mobility of my right knee. The improvements are wonderful. By equalizing my strength and flexibility, I am able to walk, run, and cycle without favoring my left leg. As an avid road cyclist, this is extremely important. The improvement allows for a full pedal stroke equal on both right and left. Simply a wonderful service — friendly, courteous, and most helpful at every step.” –Dick N.

Stay Safe

And Have Fun With Your Grandkids This Summer

vital to preventing injury. Yet, the safe activities you do with your grandkids don’t have to be boring. Sports like tennis or golf are friendly for all ages and abilities. Learning about these sports together can keep you active and connected to your grandkids. If sports aren’t in your wheelhouse, teach your grandkids your favorite hobby, like fishing, gardening, or sewing. Continue healthy habits. It’s exciting to spend the day or weekend with your grandchildren, but don’t allow yourself to forget important habits that are necessary for your health. Continue to take any prescribed medication and stick to a healthy diet of colorful vegetables and fish, which are both great for your heart and joints. And don’t forget to continue your at-home stretches! These are essential to your treatment and healing. You can even get your grandkids involved by teaching them about the importance of healthful habits. Remember to take breaks. Kids seem to never run out of energy, but it’s important that you take regular breaks to keep your energy up. These should include sitting down, drinking water, and stretching. If you’re outside, don’t forget to regularly apply sunscreen as well. The best part about doing this is that there’s a good chance your grandkids need the same opportunity. Take a few minutes each break to make sure they drink water and are properly protected with sunscreen. It’s always special to spend time with your grandchildren, but if you’re in pain while you’re playing with your grandkids, seek professional help.
