If you’re injured while training for a marathon, playing a sport competitively, or simply trying to get into better shape, your confidence, and sometimes even your mental health, may suffer. Research has shown that exercisers who experience an injury during their workout or while playing a sport feel as if they experienced a major loss. Strangely enough, many will also go through the stages of grief. If you’re injured, you may experience denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. You might start in denial and think the injury is not as bad as it actually is, but before long, that denial can turn into anger. You might be mad at yourself for pushing too hard or angry at other people or exercise machines that may have caused the injury. Anger can quickly turn into bargaining and depression, but eventually, you will accept it and will look for ways to move forward. It’s never an easy situation. The injury can become difficult to manage, but once it heals, recovery can pose other challenges. An injured individual might take unnecessary precautions to ensure they remain injury-free. While our bodies heal, we also have to heal psychologically to maximize our return from an injury. Thankfully, you can do a few things to make heading back to the gym after an injury much easier. While you’re still healing, try to reframe your injury. It doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You can look at it as a way to invest in new hobbies or activities. When you do head back to the gym, set small, specific, and short-term goals that help you slowly get back into a routine. Establish a reliable support system to encourage you along the way.
