ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF GOLF On the Best Courses in the Country

In the early days of April, golf fans across the country tune in to one of the most exciting events in the world of sports, the Masters. The Masters is the first major professional golf championship of the year and takes place every year in Augusta, Georgia, at the Augusta National Golf Club. Traveling to Augusta and watching the pros tee off at the Masters or simply playing at Augusta is on many golf enthusiasts’ bucket lists, mine included. Golf has always had a special place in my heart ever since I picked up my first set of clubs when I was 13 or 14. I never had a lesson or a coach, so I had to teach myself the ins and outs of the game. My dad and uncle helped develop my interest in the sport, and we spent plenty of time together on the course. When I went to college, I started playing more often and even more once I started grad school in St. Augustine, Florida. It was a great bonding experience for me and my friends. It didn’t hurt that I was also improving my game. While I love playing the sport itself, the environment is what really speaks to me. I love the greens and the blue skies that envelop you as you play. I like the challenge the game brings, but courses that are enjoyable to walk or drive around are a step above the rest. That’s part of the reason courses like Augusta are so popular with golfers of all levels. Another course I absolutely love is TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Every year, TPC Sawgrass hosts the Players Championship, which I used to attend when I lived in the area. I was a big Fred Couples fan during that time and loved how he approached the game. He actually won both times I watched the tournament in person. I remember watching him tee off

on one of the holes, and we started to head to where his ball landed. We had to cross a bridge to get there, and my buddy elbowed me while we were crossing and said, “Don’t trip him!” He was referring to Couples — who was walking right on my heels. My buddy and I always joke about that situation. I actually went and played at TPC Sawgrass after I graduated. It was one of my favorite golfing experiences to play a top-level course like that. It’s always cool to play major courses because it amps up the experience when you watch it on TV. You can compare your shots to the pros and boost your confidence whenever they miss a putt you made. People always joke around saying things like, “How can you have a good time watching others golf?” It’s a much different experience watching the game in person than it is watching on TV. I even brought my wife to a tournament one time, and she had a wonderful experience. If you haven’t attended a professional golf tournament before, you should make an effort to do so in the future. Being a business owner and having kids has really put a limit on my time on the course. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, since I’ve been able to play higher quality courses when I have the rare opportunity. I hope you all can get on a course and play a round of golf this spring season. It’s a great way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors while staying active.

If you’re injured while training for a marathon, playing a sport competitively, or simply trying to get into better shape, your confidence, and sometimes even your mental health, may suffer. Research has shown that exercisers who experience an injury during their workout or while playing a sport feel as if they experienced a major loss. Strangely enough, many will also go through the stages of grief. If you’re injured, you may experience denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. You might start in denial and think the injury is not as bad as it actually is, but before long, that denial can turn into anger. You might be mad at yourself for pushing too hard or angry at other people or exercise machines that may have caused the injury. Anger can quickly turn into bargaining and depression, but eventually, you will accept it and will look for ways to move forward. It’s never an easy situation. The injury can become difficult to manage, but once it heals, recovery can pose other challenges. An injured individual might take unnecessary precautions to ensure they remain injury-free. While our bodies heal, we also have to heal psychologically to maximize our return from an injury. Thankfully, you can do a few things to make heading back to the gym after an injury much easier. While you’re still healing, try to reframe your injury. It doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You can look at it as a way to invest in new hobbies or activities. When you do head back to the gym, set small, specific, and short-term goals that help you slowly get back into a routine. Establish a reliable support system to encourage you along the way. With the proper preparation, you’ll return from an injury with more confidence than ever before.

How to Mentally Prepare for Exercise After an Injury

3 EASY POOL EXERCISES

As the weather continues to get warmer, you might rather head to the pool instead of the gym. Thankfully, you can get a good workout at the pool, and you don’t even need to dedicate time specifically for swimming. You can do plenty of exercises in the pool that will leave your body feeling refreshed. Aquatic training is a fantastic option if you want to relieve joint pain or just shake up your regular exercise routine. If you’re interested in exercising in the water but don’t know where to begin, give these exercises a try. WALKING It’s no secret that water offers resistance. If you try walking in a pool, it’s going to be much more difficult than if you were walking on land. Walking in the pool provides a great low-impact workout and can be incredibly beneficial for people with arthritis. You can walk back and forth on the shallow end of the pool or use a flotation device and make the walking motion in the deep end.

Amp up this workout by going faster, longer, or by adding extra resistance.

LEG SWINGS To do this exercise, you’ll need to stand in the water at the edge of the pool. Grab the edge with both hands and swing your legs, one at a time, from side to side in a pendulum motion. Water adds extra resistance to this exercise, so it helps to strengthen and tone your legs. Ensure that your core stays still and your legs do all of the movement to maximize results. JUMPING JACKS Jumping jacks are a great way to get your heart rate up, but they become even more beneficial when done in the water. The resistance of the water makes them much more difficult than on land which, in turn, increases your calorie burn. This exercise is relatively high impact on land, but the buoyancy of water actually supports your joints when done in a pool.

Get Outdoors With the Family Through Cycling

n g

CYCLING IS THE PERFECT ACTIVITY FOR ALL AGES

You likely learned how to ride a bike as a kid — according to a 2013 survey, about 94% of American adults did. Even if it has been a while since your last ride, most people agree you never forget how, and you don’t have to be in great shape to get started. Outside of walking, biking might be the most accessible exercise for all ages and ability levels. The beauty of biking is that it can be as relaxing or challenging as you want. The average kid learns to ride at around 5 years old, so the basics aren’t complicated. Biking helps young children get outside and gives them a taste of being a “big kid.” As a result, it’s excellent for their self-esteem as well as their fitness. Cycling is also perfect for adults who are new to exercise or need a low-impact activity. A short ride on a flat surface will get the heart rate up without feeling too strenuous, making it optimal for beginners. Older adults and people with knee problems also use biking as an alternative

to other forms of exercise because it’s easier on their joints.

Meanwhile, those looking for a challenge can easily find one. If you want a strenuous workout, it’s easy to ride farther, increase the resistance on your bike, or pick a steeper bike trail to explore. Biking is only a cakewalk if you choose to make it one. Since it’s perfect for all ages, cycling is the ideal outdoor activity to do with your family, allowing everyone to be involved in quality time together while promoting their health. To get started, make sure everyone has a bike they can use comfortably and a helmet that fits, plus understands bike safety. Once the basics are taken care of, you’re ready to hit the trails or explore the neighborhood. Even if you never learned how to ride, there’s no time like the present. You might feel a little silly at first, but the benefits of cycling will serve you — and your family — well for the rest of your life.
