"Field & Forest" Art & Artists Catalog May 11, 2022
From Firnew founder and director, Trish Crowe:
"The Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle is thrilled to announce Field & Forest, a mixed media art experience at the Firnew Barn Gallery and environs May 15, 1 – 5 PM, 19 Wolftown – Hood Road, Hood, VA. Free and open to the public. Families and children welcome! While the pandemic closed our doors, our artists opened their hearts to the natural world around us. Their return to the Farm was profound and intentional. Returning to their home, the works of forty artists will be on exhibit and for sale, but the intent is experiential. Wear your walking shoes, the barn doors will be open, and explore our artists’ creativity and love of place. Their work in mixed media has taken new boundaries and new heights. John Berry, photographer, brings his large format cows fro m Woodberry Forest’s Baker Gallery, to hang in our forest. Collaborating with Tina Wade, mixed media artist, they worked together and created forest sculptures. Textile artists, Vickie Watts and Leslie Barham created fabric and fiber sculptures of the forest floor for installation in the center of the open barn. Each element was inspired by nature and created by hand. Artist and floral designer Gail Trimmer-Unterman will create a human form made from living flowers and it will be installed in the silo. Assuring that every sense will be awakened!
Food and beverages available for purchase from Madison's Salsa Street Grill and The Frank Truck."

Barbie Babcock Not Today Acrylic 14 x 18 $625
"For many reasons I have been leaning towards a plant-based diet for the past several years and have drastically limited my consumption of meat. This painting was done of my neighbors cows. It serves as a reminder of the majestic beauty of these magnificent animals and my lifelong love of cows."
4
Leslie Barham and Vickie Watts Forest Floor Group Mixed media textile sculpture made up of 6 individual sculptures offered for sale as a group or as individual pieces
" The seeds for “Forest Floor” were sown more than 2 years ago when the restrictions of the pandemic led us to take regular walks in the woods. We immediately recognized a shared fascination with all the details of forest life. Nature provides an endless source of inspiration, and we began collaborating with various ways to incorporate this love of nature into artistic ventures. Along the way, we discovered the possibilities for recreating natural forms using a range of media, experimenting with botanical dyes, needle felting, fabric sculpture, and handmade paper among others. “Forest Floor” took root and began to grow. And grow it did, until it became a series of textile sculptures depicting the flora and the fauna we had come to know firsthand in our many walks. Our goal was to try and capture the magic we had experienced and share it with others, and to create art pieces inspired by nature and crafted entirely by hand."

Ramey Campbell Ray of Light through Budding Maples Oil on Canvas 14 x 20 $525
"The welcomed change in seasons offers new motifs and ideas for the painter. Spring develops quickly and the fleeting moments that occurs in the landscape sometimes lasts only minutes. In the pastoral scene from my back field, the late afternoon sun creates a beam of light from the top of the budding maple growing along a line of other maples at the edge of the forest. The contrasting hues of red from the budding maples and the new spring green are reminders of a developing new season, new growth and new hopes."
17
Ramey Campbell Into the Woods Oil on Canvas 12 x 16 $350
"For a landscape painter, snow is a challenging motif where the snow takes on the color of the lights. In Virginia, the snow doesn't last long, so after a snowstorm all painting projects are suspended and painting activities immediately turns to the subject of snow. In the late afternoon, the yellow orange winter light casts long shadows and the pattern of light and shadows give the composition form. Animals foraging for food leave behind their footprints. The warm light on the cold snow adds a contrasting beauty to the quiet solitude."
18
Maria Festa Carter Wildflowers Acrylic 24 x 20 $425
19
Ellen Copeland Blue Oil on canvas 48 x 36 $950
"The movement in this monochromatic painting makes it engaging and gives the sense that this dependable color has a bit of an attitude. Its connection to nature lies in the words of a song titled Blue by Lucinda Williams. The song shows the appreciation of blue not only in the obvious color of heaven or the color of night, but in a tiny detail that should never go unnoticed in which the color reveals itself in a “raven’s feathers, shiny and black, with a touch of blue glistening down her back.”
20
Ellen Copeland Fields of Gold Oil on canvas 20 x 16 $375
"This small painting has a big presence. The strong colors and heavy texture help with this attribute. For me, it conjures a simple patchwork of farmland from a bird’s eye view. "
21
Ellen Copeland Back to the Garden Oil on canvas
60 x 48 $1,150
"A painting of this size can sometimes bog down midway through the process and make one rethink everything about it. I’m glad to report this is not the case here! I have a happy recollection of paint and energy flowing easily onto this canvas. Thankfully, this loose abstraction of a meadow in spring can only bring me joy."

I enjoyed the size and subject so much, I continued working with the 6x6 thru April 2022, some of which I have displayed here."

Patty Kennedy Hudson Highland Coo Acrylic on deep canvas

"A few years ago I saw my first Scottish Highland cow on the Isle of Skye, in Scotland. They are magnificent. I recently found them on a farm not far from my home! I was excited to be able to walk through the pasture and photograph them. This painting is a result of those encounters."

Jon Perry The Secret Life of Roots Acrylic 30.5 x 42.5 $650
"I think of roots as mostly invisible, secretive, yet invaluable to a tree. I'm pretty sure they are far more active than I understand. I have read that there is often a symbiotic relationship between fungi and roots called a mycorrhiza. My painting is an attempt to express this energic interaction and the feeling we would experience if we could become one with them."

Chee Kludt Ricketts Springtime, The South Pasture Acrylic 11 x 20 $400
"Memorial Day typically signals concentrated activity when the hay is gathered and baled during the spring cut here on my farm. I find the process fascinating and, in this acrylic painting, I have attempted to capture the softness of the light as it falls on the hay bales in the fields and on the surrounding mountains."
47
Janice Rosenberg Last Light Oil 12 x 16 $750

50
Ida Simmons Aerie Triptych Oil on canvas panels Each painting is 16 x 8 All 3 sold together $375
"I never tire of perching myself on top of a mountain and painting the view. Painting up there can be challenging, though: the winds are considerably stronger and the temperatures colder than down below. In addition, painting three sections of a view has its own challenges. Do I make the ridges connect even though they are far apart? Should the forests run into each other? How do I place the fields in relation to each other? I was also racing with the onset of spring to complete this trio before the leaves popped out. In the end, I designed this display to give a sense of the topography and the variety of patterns with a little bit of poetic license."
51

52
Gail Trimmer-Unterman Winter Birches Watercolor 26 x 20 $450
53
Tina Wade Moonlit Stroll Oil 20 x 16 $650
"I am lucky enough that I get to spend a lot of time hiking alone through the fields and forest where I live. Oftentimes, I find myself still far from home when the sun goes down and the moon comes up. There is a magic that only exists hiking under a full moon, out in the wild by yourself, with all the beauty that the night brings."
54
Barb Wallace Edge Effects Oil 20 x 16 $475
"The edge between a forest and field can often be a place of increased activity. On an April afternoon, the long tree shadows reach out – creating a beautiful link between the animals in the field and the observer in the woods."
55
Barb Wallace New Grass Oil 22 x 16 $375
"When we rotate the cows into a field of new grass, I love to stop and listen to them munching."
56
Carol Weiss Spirit in the Sky Oil on canvas 12 x 36 $450
"In many cultures for many centuries, corn has been represented as a spiritual symbol of fertility and rebirth. Likewise, crows have commonly been a spiritual symbol of death, but perceived as a transition to a new beginning."
57
Patricia Williams Hunting Andrew Wyeth Watercolor & Watercolor Pencil
30 x 22 $1,200
"More than 10 years after Gone But Not Forgotten (a painting shown elsewhere in this exhibit), I’m still stamping with real leaves from real trees, at least occasionally. My artistic lifeline during the
58
pandemic was a Zoom class offered by noted artist and art historian Leigh Culver. I have never been much interested in history of any kind, let alone art history —yes, I know, it’s a fault— but Leigh’s classes are so compelling and inspirational that even I was fascinated. This painting is both an homage to Andrew Wyeth and to Leigh’s lecture on the art of looking down on a subject. I was intrigued and excited by Wyeth’s painting The Hunter . I adore the tree and the subtle figure of the hunter. So, in my own way, I copied it. Yes, artists do that with some frequency. When I asked if I could possibly show the painting, Leigh assured me that it was appropriation in the best sense of the word and acceptable. In fact, it inspired a later lecture on appropriation, and I learned that I am in good company. I am in no way comparing myself to Wyeth. I mean, Wyeth , duh. But I like to think we share an appreciation for a beautiful, mysterious tree and a crisp fall day."

Claudia Wisdom-Good Texture, Field and Forest Photography collage mounted in solid oak frame 28 x 28 $275
"A study of Textures in my photographs during 2021. It all started with walking during Covid, photographing textures in the fields and the forest. Texture is something you may not even see or feel.
