One Step at a Time JANUARY 2019

EVERY GOAL IS WITHIN REACH

With the start of the new year, people are thinking about what they want to accomplish in the weeks and months ahead. Whether you set resolutions in January or you’re a goal-oriented person, chances are you know how you want to better yourself this year. As a dentist, the most common resolutions I see have everything to do with the smile. Some people want a brighter, whiter smile. Others have decided to get more extensive work done. Either way, they are very achievable goals. Of course, just about every practical goal is achievable when you put your mind to it. Take myself, for example. As long as I can remember, I have been a goal-oriented person. When I was 13, and right around the same time I arrived in the U.S. from Iran, I knew I was going to be a dentist. That was my goal. I loved working with my hands, and I loved problem-solving. On top of that, I wanted to do something that allowed me to help people. Many people in my own family had entered the medical field in one capacity or another. My brother became a cardiologist. My uncle was a general surgeon. My brother- in-law worked in internal medicine. I made it a priority to become a dentist. I knew what I needed to do. I focused on my education and was able to complete the 11th and 12th grades at the same time. This allowed me graduate from high school at age 16. From there, I went to UCLA, graduated at age 20, and went straight to the school of dentistry at USC. By 24, I was setting up my own practice in Beverly Hills, renting out a space with one of my former USC professors. I had achieved my goal I had set 11 years earlier. It required a lot of hard work, but I knew what I wanted and I was willing to put in that work. When I set goals, whether at age 13 or today, I set goals that are just out of reach — they are hard to attain. I want to be challenged and to push myself. That’s what makes each goal worth it. Then, as I work toward a goal, I make sure I’m going into the right direction and that I’m always working toward that goal, even if it’s just in a small way every day or every week.

And I don’t think about how difficult it may be. There may be a mountain in front of me, but I know I will get to the top of the mountain if I take it one step at a time. That is my whole mindset. Despite the challenge, I make the process fun and engaging. Then, when I get to the end, I’m left with a true sense of accomplishment and pride. No matter what goals you set for yourself this year, don’t let setbacks get you down. Look for creative solutions for every single barrier. Take it one step at a time and push forward. It may take time to get accomplish your goal, but when you do, you will know the challenge was worth it.

MOM REALLY DOES KNOW BEST 3 Wives’ Tales Proven True

Heartburn Means a Hairy Baby It’s hard to list wives’ tales without bringing up one about pregnancy. Many are solely based on intuition, but a few that sound odd are legitimate. In 2007, a study done by Johns Hopkins attempted to debunk the myth that heartburn during pregnancy would mean a hairy baby at birth. Instead of proving it wrong, they found that 82 percent of women with severe heartburn during pregnancy gave birth to hairy babies. Turns out the hormones that cause heartburn in pregnant women also affect fetal hair growth.

“Make a face like that, and it’ll stay that way forever.” You may have heard something like this from Mom’s book of wisdom. Maybe you never disputed the idea that mother knows best. But as you grew up, it slowly became clear that hair doesn’t grow back faster and thicker if you shave it, cracking your knuckles doesn’t cause arthritis, and gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for months after you swallow it. After a whirlwind of wives’ tales over the years, many common claims have been put under scrutiny. Wives tales have been known as pseudoscience and blind intuition, but even as many were disproved, some surprisingly proved to hold weight. Here are three wives’ tales that have proven to be true. Garlic Cures Colds For decades, moms have professed the healing properties of garlic, suggesting it can cure colds and help the body fight sickness. It turns out they were absolutely right. Garlic has antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system and nutrients that help combat illnesses. The effects of garlic can actually be more effective than over-the-counter flu medications. Some studies show that regular consumption of raw garlic lessens the likelihood of getting a cold, so if you feel a tickle in your throat, try a clove before you open the medicine cabinet. Joint Pain Predicts the Weather Did you ever look at your mom with skepticism when she would predict rain because her knees hurt? If so, you might owe your mom an apology, because there is a scientific connection. The drop in barometric pressure that’s common during storm weather causes pain in arthritic joints.

Teeth Whitening Gum

Is it Effective?

Today, there are more teeth whitening options than ever before. Between all of the whitening strips, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and chewing gums, it can be a challenge to find products that work and are worth the investment in both time and money. People want simple ways to keep their teeth looking great between regular dental appointments. One increasingly popular option is teeth whitening gum. It’s marketed as a convenient way to whiten your teeth throughout the day. The question is, can teeth whitening gum really help you maintain an illustrious smile between office visits or instead of other at-home options? The answer is in the fine print. There are many brands of whitening gum that promise whiter teeth in a matter of weeks. One popular brand of whitening gum references a study conducted on that gum as to the effectiveness of its whitening power. A closer look reveals that the study determined that, in order to achieve noticeable results, a person has to chew a piece of gum in 12-minute intervals five times per day — for 12 weeks.

That would mean you would have to chew 420 pieces of this gum over a three-month period in order to notice any change. For some people who love gum, this might be a realistic endeavor, but for most people, it’s unlikely you would achieve the results you truly want. And don’t forget, many teeth whitening gums rely on artificial sweeteners and flavorings. For people who are looking for better results between appointments, whitening strips, toothpaste, or mouthwash will be more effective — either independently of one another or used together for maximum effectiveness. If you’re looking for at-home teeth whitening solutions that are simple, effective, and free of erosive chemicals and additives, look no further than the Oral Essentials line of products. You can find them online at OralEssentials.com and at many retailers across the U.S.
