“ My Back Pain Was Limiting Me From Activities, So I Decided To Do Something About It!” Is It Back Pain Or Sciatica?

Many patients with low back pain should consider physical therapy as a first line of treatment for their condition, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). An article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends that in most cases of symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease, a common cause of low back pain (LBP), the most effective treatment is physical therapy combined with anti-inflammatory medications and concludes that physical therapy and nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs are the cornerstones of non-surgical treatment. Symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease develops when a disc weakens (often due to repetitive strain), is injured, or deteriorates from aging. As a result, the disc is unable to hold the vertebrae as it should and the lack of stability can cause back pain. Approximately 75 to 85 percent of adults will be affected by low back pain during their lifetimes.

Physical therapist intervention includes strengthening of core muscle groups, including the abdominal wall, which can have positive effects in patients with this condition. (continued on inside)

High Cost Of Pain: “ A study published in the Journal of Pain estimated the national cost of pain to be in the range of $560-$635 billion dollars.”

“Why Shouldn’t You Be Able To Find Pain Relief?” Is It Back Pain Or Sciatica? (continued)

Physical therapy at Synergy Therapeutic Group includes strengthening of core muscle groups, including the abdominal wall, which can have positive effects in patients with this condition. Exercise and manual therapy including spinal manipulation, have been shown to alleviate pain in many patients. In addition, patient education to remain active and use appropriate body mechanics is beneficial. Physical therapists are trained to identify which of these treatment strategies will be most effective for an individual patient, which further improves the effectiveness of care. In addition to building the core muscle groups, hands-on therapy to mobilize the spine has been shown to be particularly effective. Physical therapists can help patients develop a safe and effective exercise program that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. Surgery should be the last option, but too often patients think of surgery as a cure all and are eager to embark on it. Receiving care from a licensed physical therapist can further improve the odds that a patient can maintain their quality of life and avoid surgery.

“Stretching Can Help You Move & Feel Years Younger!” The Benefits Of Stretching

As you age, your muscle tissue actually dries out a little, tightening. This causes a loss of range of motion in your joints and tissues. In addition to the loss of range of motion, it can really limit your active lifestyles and hinder day-to-day, normal motions. Tasks that used to be simple, such as dressing or squatting down to tie your shoes, now become extremely difficult. A regular stretching program helps lengthen your muscles and makes daily living activities much easier. Everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility. Stretching should be a part of your daily routine, whether you exercise or not. It does not have to involve a huge amount of time, but stretching can end up giving you huge results! Stretching is a natural part of what we do on a daily basis. Youmight notice that if you have been sitting in a particular position for a long time, you stretch unconsciously. It feels good! In addition to that good feeling, a consistent stretching program will produce large gains in flexibility and joint movement. Be kind to your muscles and they will be kind to you!

Patient Success Spotlight I am so grateful that I came to Synergy!

“I came to Synergy with extreme vertigo (dizziness) and as a result, I was afraid to move, drive or carry on with daily activities. I did not understand what was happening to me and the confidence I have always had in my body and my ability to move freely was challenged. My first visit was very productive both physically and emotionally, my vertigo symptoms were gone within a few days and I understood what was happening. The care I received here was for both my body and mind. I am so grateful that I came to Synergy.” - Susan B.
