G rocery consumers in the United States have turned to on- line shopping in rates never before seen as a result of the Covid pandemic.A new study from PowerReviews reports that consumers now shop online at more than four times what they were in 2017.
However, the retail environment is still very desirable to a ma- jority of consumers who are increasingly favoring a blended store-online grocery shopping approach. More than 60 percent of consumers shop for groceries online more now than they did pre-Covid.The report found that 73 per- cent of consumers had purchased grocery items online within the most recent three months of being surveyed, compared to 17 percent when they were asked the same question in 2017. Unsurprisingly, younger generations are more likely to shop for groceries online. Eighty percent of Millennials and 74 percent of Gen Z shoppers had purchased groceries online in the most recent three months of being surveyed, compared to 60 percent of Baby Boomers and 72 percent of Gen X. In addition, geographical location impacts a consumer’s like- lihood of purchasing groceries online. Eighty percent of city

The top reasons for online shopping include time savings (59 percent), personal safety (49 percent) and avoiding impulse purchases (31 percent). Ordering directly from a local grocery store (as opposed to online-only ordering services such as In- stacart or Amazon Fresh) is the most popular way to shop for groceries online;65 percent of consumers say they’ve done this. Despite the incredible surge in online purchasing, brick-and-mortar grocery shopping is still highly regarded among consumers. More than 90 percent of consumers had made an in-store grocery purchase within the most re- cent three months of being surveyed. Most consumers are doing a blend of online and in-store grocery shopping, with 95 per- cent of consumers who shopped for grocer- ies online having also made an in-store gro- cery purchase within the same time period. When asked where they’d purchased gro- cery items online from,65 percent said they’d ordered pickup or delivery from a traditional grocery or big-box store. In comparison, only 38 percent chose this option when we sur- veyed consumers in 2017. “Although consumer shopping behaviors
dwellers purchase groceries online, compared to 65 percent of consumers living in a town with a popula- tion less than 50,000. Finally, the higher the income, the more likely a con- sumer is to shop for groceries online.Eighty percent of those who make more than $100,000 have shopped online for groceries, compared to 64 percent of those who make $0-$25,000.

Smurfit Invest $40m In Latin America Business Smurfit Kappa is investing $40 million in its paper sacks business in Latin America, expanding and mod- ernizing its operations. The company said it was making the investment in response to market trends and the need for environ- mentally sustainable paper sacks.Among the planned work is the further modernization of machinery in Co- lombia, with a new machine already installed at the Palmira facility and fully operational. The $9.5 million investment has increased capacity at the plant by 100 million paper sacks per year, and reportedly improved quality. Smurfit plans to modern- ize sack paper machinery in Cali, Colombia, with a $19 million investment that will increase production capacity as well as the quality and performance of the sacks paper. In Costa Rica, a $1 million investment is set to further improve the plant in San José.The company said a new flexographic printer is ready for installation there. Wasatch Container Opens Doors For AICC Members Founded in 1995, Wasatch Container is a custom packaging design and manufacturer in Salt Lake City, Utah.Wasatch specializes in corrugated shipping box- es, retail boxes, point of purchase displays, foam fab- rication, and wooden crates. The company opened its doors, virtually, to more than 300 AICC members. The tour was guided by Jerry Frisch, the founder of Wasatch Container. After a brief company history, Frisch invited the second generation of Wasatch Con- tainer, Lauren and Ryan Frisch, to give an overview of some of the company’s specialties. Frisch then walked participants onto the floor of their original building, a 30,000-square-foot facility built in 1995, which houses its mini flexo folder gluer, a 50-inch flexo, several rotary die-cutters, unitizers, and several other machines in their compact space. The tour then moved onto the design department, sharing their 2-D and 3-D rendering capabilities and their new, high-speed CAD cutting table. After a visit to Wasatch’s ink kitchen, and spending time at each ma- chine, the tour moved to the other buildings that house their crate and foam divisions. In the foam space, Frisch showed how they do die-less die cutting and how their waterjet die cutter works and other foam fabrication. AICC’s upcoming virtual tours include The BoxMak- er in Kent, Washington, on Wednesday, February 17, and Utah PaperBox in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, March 9.
