How Juicing Changed Her Life
6

Cherie Calbom healed herself from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia with a five-day vegetable juice fast in her twenties. Thirty-six books later, “The Juice Lady” is still telling anyone who'll listen: one glass a day can change your life.
6

“On the fifth day, my body expelled a tumor about the size of a golf ball, with blue blood vessels attached. I call it God's scissors, or nature's scissors.”

9

The Seed Oil Debate
9

Calbom's newest book, The Truth About Seed Oils, tackles a subject she says has been flattened into 60-second sound bites online. The oils she cautions against are corn, soy, canola, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, rice bran, cottonseed, and peanut. They undergo, in her account, substantial industrial processing: high heat, solvent extraction, then deodorizing and bleaching to strip color, smell, and taste. She recommends replacing them with olive, avocado, and coconut oil, or ghee. “As consumers vote with their wallets, manufacturers will offer more choices,” she says, pointing to olive-oil mayonnaise and avocado-oil chips now showing up on mainstream shelves.
9

Her broader argument is about balance: many Western diets deliver far more omega-6 fat than omega-3, and she'd like to see that ratio corrected by trimming processed seed oils and adding fish like salmon, trout, sardines, and mackerel, along with walnuts, ground flaxseed, hemp seeds, and pasture-raised egg yolks. “What we want are foods, oils, and fats that support lower inflammation in the body,” she says.
9

“It bothers me when people say you have to be perfect and make it right now and drink it immediately. It's better to use the next-best option and still get nutrients you might not otherwise get.”
9

9

Hydration and the Reality of a Busy Week
10

Water, Calbom says, is non-negotiable many people are dehydrated without realizing it, and it's essential for both mental clarity and muscle function. But she's practical about the rest of the routine.
10

Big-batch juicing has become popular for readers who can't juice fresh every day: make a larger batch, refrigerate it for a couple of days, or freeze portions in glass canning jars, leaving room at the top so they don't crack. “Fresh is best,” she says, “but if you're keeping it refrigerated and covered in a glass jar, you're still going to retain a lot. Make it work for your life.”
10

Remembering George Foreman
11

Calbom spent thirteen years as George Foreman's personal nutritionist, representing the George Foreman Grill and appearing alongside him in the original infomercial that introduced it to the world. She remembers him as soft-spoken behind the scenes, with a dry sense of humor, and genuinely invested in the food philosophy behind the product grilling vegetables alongside lean meat and, more than once, catching him munching on grilled vegetables between takes.
11

One Change This Week
11

When asked what one habit could add more life to a reader's years, Calbom doesn't hesitate: “I can't say anything else but juice, because I'm The Juice Lady. Add a glass of juice to your diet each day that you possibly can.” It's a line she's repeated for decades, one she says still holds: one glass of juice a day can change your life.

CONNECT WITH CHERIE
11

In this episode of Six Weeks to Fitness, host Vince Ferguson sits down with whole-food nutritionist and renowned “Juice Lady” Cherie Calbom to explore practical strategies for healthy aging, improving healthspan, and restoring vitality after 40.
12

A major focus of the conversation is the role of fresh vegetable juice in supporting nutrition and overall wellness. Calbom challenges common misconceptions about juicing, including concerns about sugar, and recommends an 80/20 vegetable-to-fruit ratio to keep juices nutrient-dense while limiting their natural sugar content. She also explains why juicing can be an accessible way to increase daily intake of vitamins, minerals, and other plant-based nutrients.

HEALTHSPAN VS. LIFESPAN:
22

WHY LIVING LONGER ISN'T ENOUGH
22

Most of us want to live a long life. We want more time with our families, more birthdays, more celebrations, and more opportunities to enjoy the things we worked so hard to achieve. But I believe we should ask a deeper question: how do we live longer while remaining healthy enough to enjoy those additional years? That question is at the heart of the difference between lifespan and healthspan.
22

What Is Lifespan?
22

Lifespan is simply the total number of years we are alive. If someone lives to be 90, that person has a lifespan of 90 years. Thanks to advances in medicine, technology, disease prevention, and emergency care, people are living longer than previous generations. Conditions that once shortened lives can now be diagnosed earlier, treated more effectively, or managed for many years. That is tremendous progress. But living longer does not always mean living better.
22

A person may reach 85 or 90 yet spend the final 10, 15, or even 20 years dealing with chronic illness, limited mobility, weakness, pain, or the loss of independence. Those additional years still matter, but most of us would prefer to enter them with the physical and mental capacity to remain engaged in our own lives. That is where healthspan comes in.
22

What Is Healthspan?
22

Healthspan refers to the number of years we live in relatively good health — years in which we can remain active, independent, mentally engaged, and able to do the things that give our lives meaning.
22

The World Health Organization describes healthy aging as developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being as we grow older. That includes our ability to move, think, build relationships, make decisions, and continue participating in the activities we value.
22

“Lifespan is about the number of years in your life.
22

Healthspan is about the amount of life in those years.”
22

The Gap Between Living and Living Well
22

Many people spend most of their lives focused on earning a good living, raising a family, and meeting everyday responsibilities. Health often becomes a priority only after something goes wrong.
22

We may ignore elevated blood pressure because we do not feel sick. We may overlook gradual weight gain, muscle loss, poor sleep, or declining energy because those changes happen slowly. We tell ourselves that feeling tired, stiff, or weak is simply part of getting older.
22

But many of the problems we associate with aging are also influenced by how we live. This does not mean that every illness can be prevented. Genetics, environment, access to healthcare, and circumstances beyond our control all play important roles. However, our daily habits can influence how well we function as the years pass.
22

Healthspan Includes the Mind
24

We cannot talk about healthy aging without discussing mental and emotional well-being.
24

Stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and a lack of purpose can affect our health just as physical inactivity and poor nutrition can. Human beings need connection. We need relationships, community, and reasons to look forward to the next day.
24

Remaining socially engaged, learning new skills, volunteering, pursuing meaningful work, and staying connected to family and friends can all contribute to a fuller life. A person can appear physically healthy and still feel disconnected or without direction. That is why healthspan must address the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. You do not need to transform your entire life overnight. Choose one area and begin there. Small actions, repeated consistently, can lead to meaningful improvements.
24

Redefining Success as We Age
24

For me, successful aging is not about trying to look 25 forever. It is about remaining strong, energetic, capable, and fully engaged in life. Can you get up from the floor? Can you climb a flight of stairs? Can you carry your own groceries? Can you travel, play with your grandchildren, pursue your interests, and make your own decisions? Those are meaningful measures of health. We cannot control exactly how long we will live. But we can take steps to improve the quality of the years we are given.
24

Living to age 90 is a remarkable achievement. Reaching 90 with the strength, clarity, purpose, and independence to enjoy your life is even better. That is why living longer is not enough. The real goal is to add more life to your years.
24

Extraordinary Locations in Cartagena, Colombia
26

Cartagena, Colombia
27

A PERSONAL JOURNEY THROUGH CULTURE, HISTORY AND DISCOVERY
27

There are some places you visit because they are beautiful. There are others you visit because something about them calls to you long before you ever arrive. For me, Cartagena, Colombia, was one of those places.
27

I had wanted to experience Cartagena not simply as a vacation destination, but as a woman who has always been fascinated by culture, history and the stories that live within a place. I wanted to walk through the streets, see the architecture, experience the colors, hear the music and taste the food. Most of all, I wanted to understand what makes Cartagena more than a beautiful Caribbean destination.
27

And Cartagena does not disappoint.
27

From the moment you begin exploring the historic city, there is a sense that you are walking through layers of time. The colorful buildings, balconies overflowing with flowers, cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture create an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic. Yet Cartagena isn't a museum frozen in time. It is alive. There is music in the streets, conversation spilling from restaurants and cafés, vendors offering their crafts, and people moving through their everyday lives against a backdrop of extraordinary history.
27

Cartagena reminded me of the importance of slowing down long enough to actually notice where you are.
