Sixth Form Maths Scholars Event

Miss Hill led a discussion on group theory, a branch of mathematics that has close links to economics, science, sociology and computer science. Ten students started with a game of ‘ guess ⅔ of the average ’ where the winner of the game is the closest to this value. Repeated games demonstrate what happens once the students jump from rationality to common knowledge of rationality and eventually reach the Nash Equilibrium. Students also discussed the Prisoner ’ s Dilemma and how the outcomes can be represented in a play - off matrix and how to find the play - safe strategy. The highlight of the session came when the students got to play the game of ‘ matching

pennies ’ in pairs and experimented with having a strategy and psyching out their opponent or watching for tells. A discussion followed on how to work out the probability distribution for a mixed strategy game but with the realisation that this is difficult to achieve in real life due to human nature - we are designed to spot patterns making it very difficult to randomise events.

Early Applications Pippa and Fallon

UCAS season has begun again in the Sixth Form, with a growing buzz of anticipation in the air as applications begin to make their way to the final touches stage. After much checking of personal statements and perfecting of school references the first two applications have been sent with many more lined up in the departure lounge. Well done to Pippa and Fallon for being the first 2 past the post with early applications sent off for medicine and conservatoires. We look forward to the many applications to come and wish the best of luck to those already sent!

Value of Food Interview with Sarah Calcutt of UK Rural Policy Group Vice - chair and Founding Partner of the UK's Rural Policy Group met with Year 13 Munopa Nhete virtually yesterday as part of her Food Science and Nutrition investigation into the value of food in the current cost of living crisis.

Munopa questioned Sarah, who also Chairs the National Fruit Show and Chairs the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust on how the current high rates of inflation might be exacerbating the UK's food system and highlighting the need for a food supply that is resilient and works for both food businesses and consumers. Their discussion reflected on the business, cultural, policy and political considerations that reinforce the consumer expectations of low - price.
