Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the new Director of Estates and Facilities will lead our exciting vision to transform the Canterbury Campus; opening contemporary spaces for learning, teaching and research, while celebrating the City’s rich heritage. Our £150m investment over the next 10 to 15 years will provide a campus for the 21st century which students, staff and the wider community can enjoy. Carefully designed to complement the history of our campus location on a UNESCO World Heritage Site – built on the grounds of the ancient St Augustine’s Abbey and within sight of Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin’s Church – our new buildings and conversion plans connect the City’s historic sites. The Director of Estates & Facilities will take executive level leadership responsibility for the Estates & Facilities Division which manages all aspects of the built environment across the portfolio. This includes capital development, planned and reactive maintenance and lifecycle works in addition to all aspects soft services delivery. The Estate An overview We are privileged to be situated in a UNESCO World Heritage Site occupying part of the same grounds as St Augustine’s original abbey in the historic and cosmopolitan city of Canterbury. As one of only a small number of universities in the UK to enjoy this prestigious connection with a World Heritage Site, we are proud of our location and unique link to this wonderful city. Our main campus in Canterbury attracts students from all over the world and the majority graduate in one of the UK’s most important historic buildings – Canterbury Cathedral. This special city is home to three universities. It’s vibrancy, history and connectivity to London and the continent make it a great place for staff and students to work and study. We also have campuses and centres in other key Kent and Medway locations.
Our Medway Campus, part of the Univer- sities at Medway specialises in health and education courses alongside an Institute of Medical Sciences. Our postgraduate centre, which specialises in Applied Psychology, is based in Tunbridge Wells.
The Estates Strategy This Estates Strategy has been written to respond to the needs of the Canterbury Christ Church University Strategic Framework 2015-20. Students and the student experience are at the centre of the University’s Strategic Plan and define its ambitions. For the estate at the most basic level this means that by ensuring we maintain what is in our control and will help to avoid any potential negative experiences. Working with the Student Union and the Student Body, we continue to be proactive to student & staff needs and what they experience will help deliver excellence in education. By providing surroundings that are both pleasant and functionally suitable creates an environment that promotes learning. Maximising the use of our facilities will allow us to target available investment in enhancing the Student Experience. Four key challenges for Canterbury Christ Church University are addressed within this Estates Strategy and can be summarised as follows: Improving Space Utilisation • Implement a Space Policy • Regular review of student number forecasts to identify utilisation potential • Update space utilisation records annually • Review office space usage and potential for further open plan/shared tutorial space/ and private model Maximising the Use of the Estate • Review dispose/retain/relocate options for leases due to expire in planning period including • Salomons Student Accommodation leases and Augustine Arts Centre. • Implement the actions agreed in response to the Master Plan in respect of all proper- ties. Matching Developing Curriculum Needs • Implement the agreed strategy for Arts provision in reaction to curriculum proposals from Faculties of Arts & Humanities and Education. To include the disposal of AAC and total required provision of the new “Digital Arts” offer and transfer of MAD and commercial music from Broadstairs. to the proposed Arts Building in Canterbury. • Review the potential further financial investment at Polo Farm to support sports activity and the sports curriculum including the transfer of Stodmarsh playing fields to Polo Farm. • Work with all Faculties to develop a medium term student numbers and teaching accommodation needs plan to 2020. • Provide accommodation levels required to meet teaching accommodation needs from the campus network, space utilisation, medium term needs reviews and disposals
Investment Priorities • Complete the rolling programme of classroom and furniture upgrades at North Holmes campus • Maintaining a 3 year rolling average of maintenance spend at 2-2.5% of Insurance Replacement Value • Fund the maintenance plan taking into account the agreed “Master Plan” buildings and the retained estate for a minimum ten year period. We have an exciting vision to transform our Canterbury Campus, opening contemporary spaces for learning, teaching and research, while celebrating the city’s rich heritage. Carefully designed to complement the history of our campus location on a UNESCO World Heritage Site – built on the grounds of the ancient St Augustine’s Abbey and within sight of Canterbury Cathedral and St Martin’s Church – our new buildings and conversion plans connect the city’s historic sites. Our development of the former Canterbury Prison site and the wider North Holmes Campus is ambitious and is designed to provide contemporary spaces for learning, teaching and research, and will include the creation of a Kent and Medway Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise Hub. This major new first class facility will support high value employment, investment and economic growth in science, engineering and technology businesses locally and regionally. Our Estate Master Plan was approved by Canterbury City Council in 2016, providing new buildings and green spaces for students, staff and the local community. This includes a heritage centre and the recreation of the former Pilgrims’ Trail from St Martin’s Church. A new arts building is the first development in our Estate Master Plan and will support new and existing creative and digital courses.

BUILDING 1 Creative Arts Building Our new Creative Arts Building is the first development to open as part of our £150m plans, providing another vibrant, creative facility on our campus. Constantly evolving courses and the latest digital facilities will support and inspire the next generation of

BUILDING 2 Science, Engineering, Technology and Health Our new multi-million pound facility for Science, Engineering, Technology and Health opens in 2020. It will be home to the Kent and Medway Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise (EDGE) Hub, alongside new specialist health facilities which, when combined, will provide work ready graduates through innovations in Learning and Teaching across a wide range of industry focussed subjects at Christ Church. The Director of Estates & Facilities The Post Job Title: Director of Estates and Facilities Location: Responsible for: The Director of Estates and Facilities is a full member of the University’s Senior Management Team which has the overall strategic and operational responsibility for the development of institution wide strategies and services in support of the University’s goals and objectives. Main Purpose of the Role The Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, direction, development and delivery of a comprehensive range of professional estates and facilities Services to underpin the University’s strategic goals. He/she will ensure that resources are applied efficiently, effectively and sustainably to support the achievement of the University’s aspirations in relation to estates and facilities. The Director is also a member of the Leadership team within the Resources Directorate and actively contributes to the development and delivery of the Directorate service vision and improvement strategies. The Director of Estates and Facilities directly line manages the two Assistant Directors of Estates, Facilities and Operations, the Project Director (Estate Master Plan) and the Assistant to the Director of Estates and Facilities. The post holder is accountable for an income target of £10.7m, an expenditure budget of £18.3m, a capital budget of £5.5m as well as management responsibility for a department comprising 300 staff. In addition, the Director will also be responsible for managing the Estate Master Plan capital investment programme estimated to be £150m over the next 10-15 years. Main Duties • Work in partnership with the Student Body to develop focused, cost effective estates and facilities services. • Deliver the University’s Estate Master Plan development projects on time, and in budget to the required quality standards. • Develop and implement the University’s Estate Framework and Facilities Management strategies in support of the University’s strategic aspirations and goals. • Provide professional leadership for members of the Estates and Facilities department in the delivery of high quality, student focused and responsive services. • Lead and promote the efficient and sustainable use of the University’s resources including, where appropriate, engagement with external funding bodies and partners. • Develop, manage and implement the University’s student residential accommodation strategy including all new developments, refurbishments and disposals • Contribute to the future strategic development of the University by fully engaging in the work of the University’s Senior Management Team by providing professional input into the development and implementation of strategies, plans and initiatives as appropriate. Other responsibilities: • Lead the progressive enhancement of services through a process of organisational development and consolidation in line with the University’s estate strategy. • Lead the development and co-ordination of the University’s property, estates and facilities services creating environments that are welcoming, secure, supportive and sustainable for students, staff and visitors. • Champion the optimum use of space, facilities, buildings and resources across the University’s campuses, in the context of achieving value for money, good space utilisation (target 40%). • Oversee and direct the department’s income generation activities in order to ensure sustainability and optimum return on investments. • Promote and develop the relationship between Estates and Facilities department and other internal stakeholders to promote an integrated approach to service provision. • Co-ordinate appropriate systems and processes to secure student/staff feedback and ideas relating to the delivery and development of estates and facilities services • Promote the University’s commitment to sustainability in all its forms though the work of the Estates and Facilities department. • Lead cultural and organisational change across the Estates and Facilities department in order to take forward an ethos of continuous improvement underpinned by a commitment to equality and diversity. • Contribute to external/internal quality enhancement reviews and audits.
