8.9.8. Active Transportation Priority Projects The Active Transportation (AT) priority list reflects a refreshed evaluation of bicycle and pedestrian needs using updated data and a consistent, mode-specific scoring framework, as shown in Figure 8.18 . Projects were analyzed within four separate categories, sidewalk gaps, bikeways, trails, and crossing gaps, because each facility type serves different functions, has unique design considerations, and requires different inputs for evaluating mobility, safety, and connectivity benefits. As a result, rankings were developed within each category rather than across modes.
Bike and technology lane maintenance is critical to delivering high-quality protected infrastructure. While bike lane cleaning technology has advanced, it is still in its early stages. The City of Fort Worth is currently piloting hand-sweeping of protected bikeways through a partnership between Transportation & Public Works and Environmental Services, with approximately $25,000 allocated annually for this effort. As the City’s high-comfort network continues to expand, maintenance funding, staffing, and technology will need to scale accordingly.
To support long-term planning, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute will develop a mid- to long-range maintenance white paper that documents recommended cleaning cycles, estimated costs per mile, and available technologies for efficient system maintenance. These facilities are no longer used only by cyclists. They also support scooters, e-bikes, and emerging delivery technologies. As Fort Worth’s mobility system evolves, bike infrastructure will increasingly serve not just commuters and recreational users, but also last-mile freight and micromobility services— making consistent, reliable maintenance more important than ever.
