Arbor Gallery meets the artists

Her photographs printed on acrylic look like modern paintings, however, they are photos taken through glass blocks. “My photography arises out of a deep reverence for nature,” said Marx. “When I go out to photograph, I don’t go looking for anything in particular. I learned early on that if I did, I would miss everything else that might be there.” Marx was a teacher at Laurentian Regio- nal High School for many years, and did not begin her career in art until she retired as a teacher sometime around 2005 or 2006. She is now a nature photographer who lived in rural Quebec for 39 years, and now lives in Vankleek Hill. Marx has a gallery in Van- kleek Hill which is open by appointment only. Vankleek Hill’s Arbor Gallery hosted a meet-the-artist event during their annual Gifted! Holiday gift sale and show. Local artists, as well as artists fromQuebec and Ontario, were on hand to answer questions and show off their work. Artists featured Saturday were Reenie Marx, Manon Sauve, Wayne Fijal, Carla Dancey, Lorie Turpin, Jessica Sarrazin, Tina Petrovicz, Tashi Farmilo-Marouf, Jane Cass, Sarah Comfort, Ingrid Gerberick, and Niki Mulder. The annual show runs fromNovember 4 to December 20. Visitors can pick up some unique gifts for the holidays and support the local arts community in the process. Alexandria’s tenth annual Festival of Lights The tenth annual Festival of Lights at Island Park will be starting soon. From November 28 to December 31, the park will be lit up with incredible lights and Christmas decorations. The event is free of charge and opened nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Christmas Eve, the park will be opened all night. Free hot chocolate and photos with Santa are available during the festi- val. The festival will see a special opening night celebration as well as New Year’s Eve fireworks. The festival is put on by community-minded people, students and businesses who voluntee- red hundreds of hours of their time and services. More about the festival can be found at www. alexandriafestivaloflights.com. – Diane Hunter Lorie Turpin has been an artist forever. “Kindergarten was the best class ever,” laughed Turpin. “I got to do all the artwork I wanted. Mymomused to take us for walks with sketchbooks. We would just drawwha- tever we saw.” Turpin took art in high school, and went on to study art at Vanier College inMontreal. Although originally from theMontreal area, she considers her home Vankleek Hill. “I’ve been here for more than 25 years. This is my home.” Turpin offers a Drink and Doodle art class which offers students a glass of wine, combined with some art instruction. “Some people come in so nervous to get started. By the time we are done, everyone is having a good time. They get a glass of wine, and get to go home with a painting.” Turpin offers several Drink andDoodle classes throughout the year. Spots can be reserved by calling 613-678-0009. Arbor Gallery is home to several events during the year, including the upcoming Art Scramble scheduled for December 12. Visitors buy a ticket and have about an hour to socialize, have a snack, and look at the works of art that have been donated for the scramble. When their number is picked from a bowl, they have one minute to pick a painting from the wall. Everyone gets to go home with an original piece of art work. Art Scramble raises funds for the gallery to support themany activities and exhibitions at the gallery.
