Impaired drivers causing trouble

He was also charged under the Liquor Licence Act with Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor. The vehicle was seized for seven days and the driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days. Jones was later released and scheduled to appear in L’Orignal court on December 9. InHawkesbury, amotorist flagged down an OPP constable shortly after midnight on November 23 to report an impaired driver.

Impaired drivers face several charges when caught. Nonetheless, there are still plenty around. On November 22, Hawkesbury OPP received complaints from motorists regar- ding a possible impaired driver in Alfred- Plantagenet. Police were on the lookout for the car when they stopped 43-year-old Robert Jones due to erratic driving. Jones, of Ottawa, was arrested and charged under

Thieves targeting tools and electronics Sometime between November 16 and 20, three homes were targeted and several tools as well as electronics were sto- len. Hawkesbury OPP is investigating a break-in on Bay Road in Champlain that occurred between November 16 and 17. Air impact tools, a nailer, drills, weed- eater grass trimmer, a laser level and other items were stolen from the shed. Any information on this crime should be repor- ted to Sergeant Adrien Joly. The police are investigating another break-in that occur- red between November 18 and 20 at a Ghislain Street residence in Hawkesbury. A Black & Decker double grinder and a Delta Shop master/disk sander were stolen. Police discovered the thief tried to break the rear patio door of the residence with no success. Any information on this crime should be reported to Constable Matthew Priess. Hawkesbury OPP is also investi- gating a break-in that occurred between November 18 and 20 at a Nelson Street residence in Hawkesbury. Electronic items including a 50-inch Sony Bravia television, Acer laptop, and an IPad mini were stolen. Any information should be reported to Constable Bradley Giroux. The OPP can be reached at 613-632-2729. Residents commuting in from Prescott-Russell to work in Ottawa or enjoy a day of shopping are warned to make sure their vehicles are locked and anything valuable either hidden or removed from inside. The Ottawa Police Service reports a rash of theft cases involving unlocked vehicles in the downtown area of the city and other sur- rounding neighbourhoods. Since the beginning of October, Ottawa police have logged about 500 theft reports involving unlocked vehicles, with about half of those cases in the downtown core. – Gregg Chamberlain The driver had been seen around town in Hawkesbury as well as in Grenville driving erratically. Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) runs an Interact Clubwhich raisesmoney for various initiatives, including raising funds for Syrian refugees. The club has been hosting a book sale, silent auction, and offering henna art to raise funds for the refugees. “We have collected $300, to date,” said Ilze Hillier, teacher at VCI, and one of the organizers of the Interact Club. “Our goal is $500, so we are sure that we’ll meet our goal. Students who voluntee-

“Please support our efforts in donating and purchasing books, having your hand adorned with our talented henna artists, and bidding on our donated artworks. Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The club has raised funds for a lot of dif- ferent things, most recently, they hosted a bake sale onNovember 12 donating $172.50 to the Veterans TransitionNetwork which is a registered charity that delivers programs to struggling veterans. The programs offer connection, communication, self-mainte- nance, and career assistance to veterans transitioning into civilian life.

The students also hold a food drive each year, donating the results to the Vankleek Hill Food Bank. Some of the other efforts from the Interact Club include Dress Purple Day to show support for the prevention of child abuse, they have collected shoes forTheMil- lion Shoe Drive for Shoe Bank Canada, and countless other projects in service of others. The club teaches students the importance of community, locally and globally, as well as responsibility and leadership. Alison Rowlands travelling with a purpose

Alison Rowlands is a typical teenager. She likesmusic, hanging with her friends, scary movies, and video games. But this teenager also likes history, traveling, and helping others. On March 13, the Vankleek Hill Colle- giate Institute (VCI) grade 10 student will be traveling to Guatemala to help out with labour, building, and caring for others. She is the only student from VCI going on this trip. Other students from around Canada will be going to Guatemala as well to help out with much needed support. Gerry Delorme from the Hawkesbury Rotary Club said the club is sponsoring Rowlands to take this incredible trip during the school’s spring break in March. “This is not a vacation,” said Delorme. “This is com- munity service. You’ll also have the oppor- tunity to meet a lot of other Interact Club members from all over the place. Everyone goes there very enthusiastic and comes back very happy.” The nine day Mission will take place at the Common Hope project site in Antigua, Guatemala from Sunday March 13 toMon- day March 21, 2016. The Common Hope Organization has been running these Mis- sions for 21 years. Each year CommonHope sends about 20 teams of volunteers to Gua- temala. CommonHope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala, partnering with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a process of deve- lopment through education, health care, and housing. A Vision Team is made up of ten to 12 volunteers of Interact students and leaders. Rowlands is a member of the VCI Inte- ract Club which helps to raise funds and awareness for several different initiatives, including raisingmoney for Syrian refugees. “I am very excited to go,” said Rowlands. “It is something I have always wanted to do. I like helping people.” On top of her trip to Guatemala, Rowlands will also be going on the Return To Vimy trip with her classmates in 2017. The tour will

depart on April 5, 2017, and return on April 13. This trip will take the students to Vimy Ridge to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of the battle. The Vimy trip will also take students to London and Paris. “For many students, this will be a life changing trip,” exclaimed Natalie Kouao, VCI teacher organizing the trip. “This is an amazing opportunity, and the kids are really enthusiastic.” “I’m very interested in history,” said Rowlands. “Not only do I want to see new places, but it is a great opportunity for educa- tion and to find out about history first hand.” Rowlands plans on going to university after high school. She would like to be a surgeon. “I want to go tomed school to work as either a trauma surgeon or a pediatric surgeon. I’m not sure yet. I know I want to be a surgeon. It’s a chance to help people. I’ve always been interested inmedicine since

I was a young child. There was a lot of talk about medicine when I was a kid. Everyone always said I would make a good doctor.” Rowlands was originally born in Quebec, but has lived in Chute-à-Blondeau since she was just one year old. Her mother, Lisa, owns a kennel called Cedar Bank Pet Boarding, and her father, Daniel, is retired. Rowlands loves music and takes violin lessons. She reads a lot and enjoys horror movies. “I like to read about history and fan- tasy books about stuff that could be possible,” explained Rowlands. “My favouritemovie is The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The music is great. I love to sing along to all the songs.” Rowlands likes to spend time with her friends, Ty, Beth and Taylor, watching mo- vies, talking, and playing video games. At 15, Rowlands is well on her way to a bright future.

Le 12 novembre dernier, plusieurs personnes ont fait la file pour faire un don de sang lors de la collecte de la Société canadienne du sang, à l’institut collégial de Vankleek Hill. « Je n’ai jamais eu besoin d’une transfusion, mais j’entends souvent aux nouvelles qu’on a toujours besoin de don de sang… Je veux aider aussi », a expliqué Carole Gann, de Hawkesbury. De son côté, Katie Brunskill, de la Société canadienne du sang, affirme qu’à cette période de l’année, il est plus difficile d’inciter les gens à faire un don, en particulier à cause des différents virus qui circulent et aussi, à cause de la période de la chasse. « Jusqu’à maintenant, on a pu apercevoir plusieurs visages connus à la collecte », a-t-elle indiqué, en parlant des donneurs récurents. La prochaine collecte aura lieu à l’École secondaire catholique régionale de Hakesbury, le 14 janvier prochain.

Arbor Gallery meets the artists

Her photographs printed on acrylic look like modern paintings, however, they are photos taken through glass blocks. “My photography arises out of a deep reverence for nature,” said Marx. “When I go out to photograph, I don’t go looking for anything in particular. I learned early on that if I did, I would miss everything else that might be there.” Marx was a teacher at Laurentian Regio- nal High School for many years, and did not begin her career in art until she retired as a teacher sometime around 2005 or 2006. She is now a nature photographer who lived in rural Quebec for 39 years, and now lives in Vankleek Hill. Marx has a gallery in Van- kleek Hill which is open by appointment only. Vankleek Hill’s Arbor Gallery hosted a meet-the-artist event during their annual Gifted! Holiday gift sale and show. Local artists, as well as artists fromQuebec and Ontario, were on hand to answer questions and show off their work. Artists featured Saturday were Reenie Marx, Manon Sauve, Wayne Fijal, Carla Dancey, Lorie Turpin, Jessica Sarrazin, Tina Petrovicz, Tashi Farmilo-Marouf, Jane Cass, Sarah Comfort, Ingrid Gerberick, and Niki Mulder. The annual show runs fromNovember 4 to December 20. Visitors can pick up some unique gifts for the holidays and support the local arts community in the process. Alexandria’s tenth annual Festival of Lights The tenth annual Festival of Lights at Island Park will be starting soon. From November 28 to December 31, the park will be lit up with incredible lights and Christmas decorations. The event is free of charge and opened nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Christmas Eve, the park will be opened all night. Free hot chocolate and photos with Santa are available during the festi- val. The festival will see a special opening night celebration as well as New Year’s Eve fireworks. The festival is put on by community-minded people, students and businesses who voluntee- red hundreds of hours of their time and services. Although originally from theMontreal area, she considers her home Vankleek Hill. “I’ve been here for more than 25 years. This is my home.” Turpin offers a Drink and Doodle art class which offers students a glass of wine, combined with some art instruction. “Some people come in so nervous to get started. By the time we are done, everyone is having a good time. They get a glass of wine, and get to go home with a painting.” Turpin offers several Drink andDoodle classes throughout the year. Spots can be reserved by calling 613-678-0009. Arbor Gallery is home to several events during the year, including the upcoming Art Scramble scheduled for December 12. Visitors buy a ticket and have about an hour to socialize, have a snack, and look at the works of art that have been donated for the scramble. When their number is picked from a bowl, they have one minute to pick a painting from the wall. Everyone gets to go home with an original piece of art work. Art Scramble raises funds for the gallery to support themany activities and exhibitions at the gallery. A painting of the Madonna and child complete with gold filigree by well-known local painter, Rita Iriarite. On December 12 th , from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Arbor Gallery Cultural Centre will be hos- ting its third annual highly popular fun- draiser, ArtScramble. For those who have never attended ArtS- cramble, this is how it works. After arriving at Arbor Gallery (36 Home Avenue), visitors will be given a two-part numbered ticket. Half goes to the visitor, and the other half will go into a big jar. An entire wall of the large gallery will be covered with art, everything from Beaus posters by Jordan Bamforth, to exceptionally beautiful limited edition woodcut, carbo- rundum, and lithographic prints, as well as small paintings, sketches, some jewelry, and photographs, all generously donated by artists who have either shown at the gallery in the past year, or emerging artists who were kind enough to donate a piece for this fundraiser. Visitors will have about half an hour to sa- vour the food, socialize, look over the pieces and, most important of all, write down the numbers of their favourites. Everyone who purchased a ticket will walk away with a piece of original art. Each numbered ticket stub will be drawn from the large bowl and read out. As visitors hear their number, they will have just a few short minutes to scoot up to the wall and take their choice. Obviously, everyone hopes their number will be chosen early on, but the reason for the limited number of tickets is so that even the last person who goes up to wall will have between ten and 15 items to choose from. One of the exciting additions to this year’s ArtScramble is the donation of a beautiful painting of the Madonna and child com- plete with gold filigree by well-known local painter, Rita Iriarite. The painting is a study of a Botticelli work called The Magnificent and is appraised at $200. Before officially beginning to draw numbers, this piece will be auctioned off. Only those who have purchased a full- priced ticket will be able to participate. Friends and family members can attend to help with choices for a donation. Tickets went on sale Saturday, November 21, at Scotiabank and at The Review. Sneak peaks of some of the items up for scramble will on the Arbor Gallery’s Facebook.
