Training High Five

Created in 2013, the Training High Five is a recognition program for particularly effective training solutions implemented by CHART members. The winners of the High Five are showcased at the winter CHART conference and become part of an annual compilation of ideas. This collection features solutions that have helped deliver training more efficiently, allowed trainees to more quickly achieve their learning objectives, and/or improved the overall performance of employees. Please explore this anthology of ideas, and perhaps you can copy, transform, and combine these sparks into your own successful solution. Share Your Success If you have a training solution that has really worked for you, please consider demonstrating our guiding principles of Learning, Sharing, Growing, and Caring and send it to CHART for the betterment of everyone in the organization. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple training game or a complex rollout strategy; as long as it moved the needle in some way at your company and isn’t Nominations are due by January 15th. Visit the CHART website (Membership & Community > Awards & Scholarships) for more details and the quick and easy online nomination form. 2024 CHART Training Winner HIGH Aligning Ethos: It’s as Simple as the ABCs Submitted by: Myisha Smith, Corporate Director of Training, and Megan Gibbs, Training Manager, Pacifica Hotels

Objective

We wanted to share our updated Ethos, re-invigorate training and usage in all platforms, and build a strong culture of our values from the home office to all leaders and line-level team members. A-Aligning, B-Branding, and C-Cultivating our company's Ethos with our training strategy

How it Works

We branded everything! Our Ethos turned into personalized affirmations, which we integrated by taking pictures with every new hire, department meetings, and orientation days. We collaborated with our marketing

department to create our own training logo that aligns with our company vision and then branded shirts, sweatshirts, pens, tablecloths, note pads, and lapel pins to use at every training meeting and/or completion of training assignments. Basically, every property would know when we are on site or online when we are sporting our training logo.

Results

We had great excitement and buy-in from our teams. We stayed consistent to our T&D vision and strategy by incorporating Pacifica's Ethos and Mission statement into all elements.

Digital Orientation: Live Scavenger Hunt Submitted by: Audrey Benet, Director of Training, Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar

Scavenger Hunt bridges gaps for new hires

Objective

In the world of blended learning and online orientations, we found that new hires were not getting the warm and fuzzy feeling of being properly introduced. Plus - managers were just telling them where to find things instead of a warm welcoming tour.

How it Works

While we put out flashy recruiting promotions, new hires’ day-one experience does not match up. We took the lengthy orientation manual, and broke it down into two- to four-minute videos. This helped, but we needed to find a way to personalize the experience. This is where the live Scavenger Hunt comes into play. Leaders give the new hire a printed map, which only takes 20 minutes or so to complete. We cover topics of importance to them: where is the bathroom, where can I store my belongings, etc. We utilize our Learning Management System (LMS) so they can upload their results for completion. This approach marries the digital and live new-hire experience.

Results

Our Scavenger Hunt has bridged gaps. In a truly bilingual company, Managers and Chefs thought the Spanish speakers would not participate as there is a perception that language barrier means lack of interest. However, they are the ones most excited to to fill out their Scavenger Hunts! This has really helped us bridge our front- and back-of-house team members. Additionally, it fosters connections and conversations and makes the new hire feel less like a burden and more like an integral part of the team.

DiceBreaker and Dice Debrief Submitted by: Nadine Willems-Antersijn, Owner/Facilitator, Momax Trainings and More

Objective

An Ice Breaker using a huge Dice, and the roll indicates which question to answer

To get people warmed up and engaged for a training session, so they listen and participate fully. And at the end, to get direct feedback from the session.

How it Works

For the DiceBreaker, you use a fun and huge dice, and the roll indicates which of the six questions to answer. For the Dice Debrief, use the same dice and change the questions to get the feedback you are looking for.

Results

It’s absolutely fun! Icebreakers are an underutilized tool to ease social anxiety

and warm up the group. This personal interaction allows us to step out of our comfort zone and go deeper. A simple icebreaker can go a long way to take away communication barriers and engage the team.

2024 CHART Training Winner HIGH Overcoming L&D’s Awareness Issue Submitted by: Christina Heilig, Learning and Development Manager, Dewey’s Pizza

Objective

Learning & Development (L&D) does a great job of creating content, but unless learning initiatives are marketed properly, how will anyone know about them and all they can offer? As hospitality trainers, we need to recognize that low learning engagement may be driven by a lack of awareness and the What’s In It For Me (WIIFM).

An Ah-ha moment about “marketing for learning”

How it Works

Results L&D teams should market their offerings just like marketers define their products. They should have their own value proposition, brand narrative, and positioning statement that focuses and guides the team (as well as to communicate what it brings to the organization and its audiences). I began following MAAS Marketing® over a year ago. This is a podcast committed to providing L&D professionals with practical, tactical marketing approaches from experts. The co-founders are very fun, and their website, LinkedIn posts, and podcasts are really laid back and enjoyable to engage with. Graduation Certificates for Training Completion Submitted by: Gretchen Bartkus, Chief Operating Officer, Haven Hot Chicken

Objective

We were looking for a way to celebrate the work that new team members or leaders invest in to became masters of their craft.

Certificates celebrate masters of their craft

How it Works

We implemented graduation certificates. These are awarded to Team Members, Shift Leads, Associate General Managers (AGMs), and General Managers (GMs) when they successfully complete their training. The certificates are presented with store leadership present, and cupcakes or cake is brought in to celebrate. We even bring in balloons to make is extra special.

Results The program has fostered connections among leaders as we schedule next-level leaders to participate in the graduation ceremony. If it is a Team Member or Shift Lead, the AGM and GM are present to celebrate. If it is an AGM or GM graduating, the District Manager (DM) and senior leaders are present to celebrate.
