Hello families,

Policy Spotlight

13

What an amazing start to the school year we have had so far! Student learning has gone from strength to strength in 2024! With all of the changes implemented so far this year I was a little worried that our College community may become fatigued by change – however, to everyone's absolute credit, change has been embraced wholeheartedly and we see our College taking huge strides forward in progressive practice and pedagogy.

STUDENT ENROLMENTS

SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE: • Family Partnerships Matter— Cultivating Trust from the Front Gate to the Classroom

Over the last few weeks we have been very busy. Census day for the College falls at the end of February, and according to the official tally, we have a total enrolment of 692 students across both the Primary and Secondary campuses. We are steadily seeing our numbers grow, with many enrolment enquiries taking place for 2025 and beyond, which is an additional step towards the realisation of our strategic College goal of being the school of choice in our local area. To support this growth, both campuses have begun in earnest to seek student enrolments for 2025. This has involved our Secondary College Captains vising Year 5 & 6 students at Morang South Primary School, as well as school tours for the Principal and Leadership teams and families of Morang South Primary School, Mernda Park Primary School and Mill Park Heights Primary School. The visiting Principal teams have been amazed at the transformation that has occurred within our school gates over the last few years, with many commenting on the sense of calm and focus on learning that they observed as they walked through our Learning Streets. Over the next few weeks we will further engage with our local Primary schools, Early Childhood Education providers and Kinders to welcome these communities to our College, share with them the many changes we have implemented to support student learning and engagement, and look for opportunities to partner with them in the future. In order to maintain the settled learning environments that have been carefully established by the College throughout Term 1, the College will be limiting all new enrolments to the College for the remainder of 2024.

SECONDARY CAMPUS LEARNER REVIEW MEETINGS The Secondary Campus has successfully held its first round of Learner Review Meetings (previously Parent/Carer Teacher Interviews). These were facilitated through the use of Compass – a first or our College, and the transition across from Sentral in this regard has been seamless. To support the Learner Review Meetings, Interim Progress Reports were also published to Secondary families via Compass, along with a rubric which has supported students and families to understand where their child is achieving in the domains of: completion of set work; standard of set work; organisation; and behaviour. This is another tool that we have employed to maintain high - expectations around academic rigour and has enabled productive conversations between students - families - teachers to support active opportunities to partner in learning for success.

NAPLAN

This fortnight, students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 have been engaged in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Students complete assessments in the areas of: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy. We congratulate all students on their efforts in these assessments and look forward to receiving these results in the coming weeks. It is important to note that NAPLAN is one tool that supports both schools and families in understanding a cohorts academic progression. As a College we use a range of assessments throughout the year to gauge, monitor and track individual student learning progression so that we understand in depth your child as not only a learner but also as a valued member of our College community.

PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY & ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

What a few weeks we have had in the world of sport! Last week we saw the Primary students complete their cross - country event at the Secondary Campus. This successful event will be closely followed by our whole - school Athletics Carnival. These events are such a great way for our community to come together and celebrate as one. A huge shout out to the Health and PE team who work for weeks on end behind the scenes organising these events for us all to enjoy. The sense of school pride and community connections is alive and well, cementing this Carnival as an exciting day on our annual calendars. Let's hope the weather holds out for us this year!

YEAR 7 CAMP

The Lakes excitedly saw off a contingent of Year 7 students to participate in a 3 - day school camp at The Island Camp, Cowes. Camps provide the opportunity for students and teachers to further get to know each other and establish positive relationships, whilst providing the unique opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones and tackle challenges designed to enhance their self - confidence and skill set. Camps are an incredible opportunity for personal and social growth, and as such we are very pleased to be able to continue to provide this opportunity to students.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN ’ S DAY

Students across our College recently came together to honour the achievements and contributions of women worldwide. Many events took place, but of particular note were our Senior Secondary students who were invited to two key events – one being a luncheon at Parliament House hosted by local State Member the Hon. Lily D ’ Ambrosio MP, and the other a breakfast at Mill Park Secondary College hosted again by local State Member the Hon. Lily D ’ Ambrosio MP. Both events were a vibrant showcase of empowerment, featuring engaging discussions, inspiring presentations and highlighted the importance of gender equality. Students from The Lakes passionately shared their thoughts on the role of women in various fields, fostering a sense of unity and understanding. These celebrations serve as a reminder that education plays a pivotal role in shaping a future where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and succeed. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS MATTER: CULTIVATING TRUST FROM THE FRONT GATE TO THE CLASSROOMS Recently, The Lakes has completed significant advocacy work in the area of family partnerships, presenting at both Regional Principal conferences and hosting a delegate of New Zealand, Aotearoa, Principals. Please make sure to read our community connections article in this edition which further highlights the amazing work that we have been involved in this space.

With thanks,

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

YEAR 5 REFLECTION SOPHIA & KYLE YEAR 5 SRC

On Wednesday 6 th March, Year 3 – 6 students at the Secondary Campus participated in The Lakes cross country event, facing a challenging yet thrilling experience. With hearts pounding and nerves running high, students pushed themselves to conquer the course. Despite being nervous, the atmosphere quickly turned from nervousness to excitement as the runners found their rhythm and enjoyed the race. The sense of teamwork and support among the students added to the fun and exhilaration of the event. We have been absolutely thrilled to take part in the action - packed 5/6 sports sessions every Friday! Each week, we head over to the Secondary Campus for an adrenaline - pumping sports session. We have the choice of basketball, netball, soccer, or cricket to get our hearts racing. The highlight was the epic dodgeball showdown within the 5/6 cohort. And to top it off, the teachers jumped in on the fun, leading to some hilarious moments as we battled it out on the field. We, the students, of course won!

YEAR 8 REFLECTION RUBI & KIARA YEAR 8 SRC

The Year 8 cohort have started the year really well and we have enjoyed the new changes that the school has made over the holidays. We have started our new electives that we will have for the first semester. We have Food Studies, Textiles and Media. We have also had the opportunity to be a part of Wakakirri and those of us who are members of it have started practicing. The performance is already looking great! We are all excited about the upcoming Athletics Day and we have also started Volleyball tryouts where teams will go out later in the Term.

This Term has been a huge start to 2024. In Term 1, the Student Representative Council (SRC) has been busy organising a series of exciting events for The Lakes community. Coming up next is our highly anticipated Easter raffle, scheduled for Friday, 15th. Additionally, we have an out - of - uniform day on the same day, with a gold coin donation. Don't forget to bring in chocolates for the Easter raffle to make it extra sweet! Another event to look forward to is Harmony Day on Thursday, 21st March. Harmony Day celebrates diversity and promotes inclusivity within our Lakes community. Join us in embracing and appreciating the rich cultural community that makes our school a vibrant and welcoming place for all. Our Fridays have been bustling with activity as we've been actively selling Zooper Doopers. This term, we have successfully raised a total of just over $700! FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS MATTER: CULTIVATING TRUST FROM THE FRONT GATE TO THE CLASSROOMS

Throughout the Term, The Lakes has been identified among the educational sector as an exemplar school that fosters home - school partnerships that emphasise the joint efforts required to enhance, elevate and enable a successful learning experience for all students.

Of particular note is the manner through which our College has shifted towards an emphasis on collaboration that has supported a transformation and dynamic partnership to develop within our College community, ensuring actionable involvement opportunities for parents and carers in their child ’ s learning. The Lakes Principal Team, comprising of Bill, Marcus and Bonnie, were invited to present as key speakers at the recent North - Eastern Metropolitan Area Regional Principals Forum. The team presented to over 250 Principals from the area around the key beliefs and benefits of nurturing strong connections between home and school.

Some of the key messages presented included:

1.

All families and school staff want the best for children and young people.

2.

All families have the capacity to support their children ’ s learning and wellbeing.

3.

Families and school staff are equal partners (we do “ with ” families not “ to ” families).

4.

The responsibility for cultivating and sustaining partnerships at school and home is one shared between school leaders, staff and families.

5.

Partnering starts with building relational trust.

Adapted from Mapp K, Carver I & Lander J, 2017, Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher ’ s Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success

Four key elements around relational trust were presented:

The College was able to share key School Improvement data that we have grown in over the last 12 months, including:

During their visit, The Lakes was able to share its experiences and insights into:

parents/carers playing important roles as key stakeholders in their child ’ s educational progression through owning and understanding school improvement data; facilitating an effective and trailblazing School Council that leads the strategic intents and directions of the College as partners in learning beyond the school gate; and, the importance of connections and collaboration between families and Learner Coaches who act as guides, supporters, and motivators to further stimulate learning and forge strong partnerships with families to ensure that learning as a priority is enabled both at school and at home.

Excitingly, Bill, Marcus and Bonnie have been invited to attend a study tour of New Zealand, Aotearoa, which will see them embark on a week - long Field Based Inquiry in June. During the study tour, they will travel with approximately 65 Principals from the east - coast of Australia with a focus on learning about best - practice engagement of First Nations families.

Since the conference, The Lakes has been contacted by over 10 schools from the region to act as consultants in this space, helping to build the capacity of the region and sector. Further to this, The Lakes recently hosted a delegate of Principals from New Zealand, Aotearoa, who came to the College to further their understanding on the important work The Lakes has done in this space.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter TECHZONE

I'm passionate about helping our community stay safe online. With cyber threats on the rise, it's more important than ever to protect your digital information.

Here are some quick tips to keep your family secure:

Strong Passwords:

Use unique passwords for each account. Mix letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoid obvious choices like "password123". Think of a phrase or sentence that's easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.

Two - Factor Authentication (2FA):

Enable 2FA whenever possible. It adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, like a code sent to your phone, along with your password.

Best Practices:

• Keep your software and apps up to date to patch security vulnerabilities.

Be cautious of suspicious emails, links, and downloads. When in doubt, don't click.

• Limit the personal information you share online, especially on social media.

• Consider using a reputable password manager to keep track of your passwords securely.

These simple steps can go a long way in protecting your family's online accounts and data. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out.

Stay safe out there!

DISABILITY & INCLUSION

IMPLEMENTING INCLUSION @ THE LAKES

In Victoria, the drive towards Disability Inclusion within educational settings is gaining momentum, reflecting a broader societal shift towards equality and access for all. In 2024, The Lakes South Morang College will be embarking on a three - year transition into a Disability Inclusion model for teaching and learning. The Disability Inclusion model is guided by principles of equity, respect, and the belief in the potential of every student. The implementation of Disability Inclusion fosters a sense of belonging among students, improves social and academic outcomes, and prepares all students for a diverse world. Inclusive education also challenges stereotypes and promotes a culture of respect and empathy. Disability Inclusion is a dynamic and evolving journey and one in which we as a College are excited to bring to our community.

2. Professional Development for Staff

Recognising that teacher preparedness is key to successful inclusion, we will be investing in ongoing professional development. Training focuses on understanding diverse learning needs, implementing inclusive teaching strategies, and using assistive technologies. This ensures that our staff are equipped to support all students effectively.

3. Inclusive School Culture

The Lakes South Morang College strives to cultivate an inclusive culture. This includes promoting understanding and acceptance among students through awareness programs, celebrating diversity, and encouraging peer support initiatives. An inclusive culture ensures that all students feel valued and part of the school community.

4. Collaboration with Families and Communities

Inclusion efforts extend beyond the school gates, involving families and the wider community. We aim to engage with parents and carers to understand their children's needs better and work collaboratively to support educational outcomes.

Further information

If you have any further questions regarding the roll out of Disability Inclusion at The Lakes, please contact Bek Sutton on 9404 9000. As always, if you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please reach out to their Learning Coach. Again, we are excited to work with you to develop an inclusive and empathetic learning environment for all.

IMPLEMENTING INCLUSION: STRATEGIES IN ACTION

1. Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

A cornerstone of inclusion is the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disability. These plans are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, outlining specific goals, strategies, and accommodations that will support their learning journey.

PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY

This month we held our annual intraschool cross country event for our grade 3 - 6 students. Students who did well here will have the opportunity to progress and represent our school at district level.

Congratulations to our winners.

SECONDARY SPORTS The Senior volleyball teams took to the court. Both teams were enthusiastic and had been training regularly, showing steady improvement in both skill and team work. The girls team played, and gained more and more confidence with each game. They went through the rounds undefeated, coming a draw with one game. This earned them a spot in the Grand Final which they won in overtime. Congratulations girls. The boys played some of the best volleyball I have seen them play. Working as a team and progressing through the rounds undefeated. They were by far the most skilled team. Unfortunately, the boys, fatigued from 3 straight consecutive games, were not able to come away with the Grand Final win. Volleyball aside, our students showed our school values throughout the entire day. Ms King was the proudest teacher there today. Not only because of their results but because of the way they all showed their best selves. A special thanks to Arnie and to all of our players, especially those who didn ’ t get as much game time as others. You all worked as a team. You guys are champions!
