ATC ‘22 ARBORPALOOZA: EXPLORING THE WIDE WORLD OF TREES

Women In Arboriculture Working Toward Successful Tree Protection During Development Monday, October 3, 2022 | 3:15 pm to 3:45 pm (.50 CEU)

Presenter: Katherine Taylor Location: The Shore Room

Achieving success and respect as a female arborist on development projects can be a challenge. The world of construction is still a bit of a boys club, not only that, the value of retaining and protecting trees is not always obvious to a project team that is more focused on building new infrastructure rather than managing trees as part of that infrastructure. Successfully retaining and protecting trees requires building relationships, navigating differing project objectives, and determining when to take collaborative or direct approaches. Katherine will discuss her experience working on large development projects from the design through construction phases, share experiences on construction sites, and the outcomes of various strategies she has tried. She will also discuss ways to expand your scope on projects to improve whole landscape outcomes.

Katherine Taylor, Senior Arborist at Tree Solutions Inc., has 12 years of experience working in arboriculture, environmental con - sulting, horticultural restoration, municipal landcare programming, sustainable landscaping education, and fine gardening. Katherine is an expert in tree protection efforts for large develop - ment projects working with project teams seamlessly throughout the lifecycle of a project. She is passionate about improving the

role of arborists on development projects and strives to educate developers on the importance of retaining trees, assessing retention early in the design phase, and carefully planning tree protection. She is particularly interested in plant identifica - tion, tree biology, diagnostics, and advanced decay assessment and how these studies and tools can be utilized in all facets of arboriculture to make educated decisions. She holds an Associate Degree in Restoration Horticulture (Edmonds Community College). She is an ISA Certified Arborist (PN-8022A) and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and WSNLA Certified Professional Horticulturist. Before
