REMADE Institute To Invest $35M In Recycling Projects The Reducing Embodied-Energy And Decreasing Emis- sions (REMADE) Institute, West Henrietta, New York, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to invest up to $35 million for research and development of transformational technologies to increase the recovery, reuse, remanufactur- ing and recycling of metals, polymers, fibers and e-scrap.The $35 million investment will be matched by project partici- pants for a total investment of up to $70 million. REMADE provides up to $5 million per project for trans- formational research and development (R&D) projects and $2 million per project for traditional R&D projects. REMADE has invested $20 million in 39 public-private partnership projects to date. These projects have focused on driving down the cost of technologies needed to reuse, recycle and remanufacture materials. FCC Environmental Services, the American affiliate of Ma- drid-based FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente, reported that its material recovery facility (MRF) in Houston,Texas has been honored with the Recycling Facility of the Year 2020 award by the Arlington,Virginia-based National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA). The company won the same award in 2017 for its Dallas, Texas, MRF. The Houston MRF started operating in 2019, after the city of Houston awarded FCC a tender with the purpose of de- signing, building, financing and then operating the facility, for a term of 15 years with a possible five-year extension, “which means an order book value in excess of $250 mil- lion,” stated FCC. The 120,000-square-foot, $25 million facility receives, sorts, recovers and markets recyclable materials at a pro- cessing capacity of up to 145,000 tons per year. The sorting process is fully automated, and is equipped with optical and elliptical sorters, screens and cleaning systems for paper, cardboard and glass, eddy current and crossbelt magnetic separators. Quincy Recycle To Open Wisconsin Facility Quincy Recycle, a national recycling and waste stream management company based in Quincy, Illinois, is opening a new recycling facility in Green Bay,Wisconsin, to expand its reach and capabilities in the Midwest. The company pur- chased a 64,000-square-foot facility on September 1.The fa- cility will operate primarily within the recovered fiber and plastics commodity markets, and the company also recycles other commodities, such as Gaylord boxes and metals. Quincy says it is “investing heavily” in and hiring key team members for the facility, estimating it will need to hire 20 employees within the next 12 months to operate the facility, with an anticipated production start date of January1, 2021.
