“Serving The Industry For More Than Fifty Years”

Industry Seeks Recycling Holy Grail by Greg Kishbaugh T he project “HolyGrail 2.0”, launched byAIM, the European Brands Association, together with more than 85 companies and organiza- tions aims to launch an industrial pilot to prove the viability of digital watermarks technologies. The original Pioneer Project Holy Grail was facilitated by the Ellen MacArthur foundation. It’s been reported that PepsiCo is running trials on products encod-

Nestlé Invests In Closed Loop Fund Swiss company Nestlé is investing $30 million in the Closed Loop Leadership Fund, the private equity fund of New York City-based circular economy in- vestment firm Closed Loop Partners. The investment is intended to help lead the shift from virgin plastics to the use of food-grade recycled plastics in the United States and is the first to use Nestlé’s pack- aging venture fund established earlier this year. The packaging venture fund is part of Nestlé’s overall investment of up to 2 billion Swiss francs designed to acceler- ate the development of sustainable pack- aging solutions. Financing The Loop The investment will be used to finance the Closed Loop Leadership Fund’s ac- quisition of well-established, best-in-class companies that are advancing the circular economy in the U.S.,Nestlé said. The fund aims to increase recycling rates by an ad- ditional 25 percentage points in areas ser- viced by the portfolio companies. Through its investment in the Closed Loop Leadership Fund, Nestlé will have access to recycled plastics feedstock pro- cessed by companies in which the fund will invest to achieve greater volumes of

ed with invisible digital watermarks for more effective recycling. The technology is referred to as the “holy grail” that will make mechanical sorting more efficient. The beverage giant and other packaging stakeholders are evaluat- ing how to industrialize this solution for a more streamlined waste stream. They note that watermarks can be used in consumer engage- ment, supply chain visibility and retail operations. Postage stamp sized watermarks on packaging—which are not visi- ble to the naked eye—make it possible to effectively sort the material into specific waste streams. Conventional sensor technologies (e.g. near infrared spectroscopy) are not able to reliably identify multi-ma- terial packaging, so they can end up as contaminants when recycling mono-materials. With this new technology, it becomes possible to separate materials more accurately and generate new waste streams, which then can be recycled with enhanced recycling technologies.

Aldi To Reduce Plastic Packaging By 50% By 2025 Aldi has committed to reducing the volume of plastic packaging used by 50 percent by 2025. The new commit- ment will see the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket remove 74,000 tons of plastic packaging during the next five years, the equivalent to 2.2 billion single items of plastic. To achieve this target,Aldi will work to remove and reduce unnecessary packaging and switch to alternative materials. Where plastic is required, it will be recyclable and made of recycled material wherever possible. The new target is part of Aldi’s overall strategy to ensure that all own-label products are recyclable, reusable or com- postable by 2022 and branded products sold at Aldi by 2025. Since introducing its plastic-reduction strategy in March 2018,Aldi has removed more than 6,000 tons of plastic and replaced more than 3,200 tons of unrecyclable material with recyclable alternatives. Bimbo Bakeries, TerraCycle Partner Bimbo Bakeries USA, a baking company based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, has partnered with TerraCycle, Trenton, New Jersey, to make its bread, buns, bagels and English muffin bags in the United States nationally recyclable. For every pound of packaging scrap sent to TerraCycle through the new Bimbo Bakeries USA Recycling Program, collectors earn points that can be used for charitable gifts or converted to cash to be donated to nonprofit organizations, according to a news release from Bimbo Bakeries on the partnership. IRG Names CEO Of Startup Plastics Recycling Business International Recycling Group (IRG), a recycling startup company based in Erie, Pennsylvania, has appointed Chris Dow as its Chief Executive Officer. Dow will be responsible for developing the post-use plastics sorting facility, which the company has dubbed a “SuperPRF” (plastics recovery facility). IRG had announced plans to construct the facility August 18, with a goal of starting operations in 2022. The facility will process more than 500 million pounds of post-use resi- dential, industrial and commercial plastics each year. Machinex Reports Record Year For Baler Sales Plessisville, Quebec-based Machinex said it has had a re- cord year of balers sales, including eight single-ram and 12 two-ram high-capacity balers, throughout Canada and the United States. Recycling Holy Grail (Cont’d from Page 1) These digital watermarks also provide other opportuni- ties. For example, consumers can use a smartphone app to find details about the packaging and how to recycle it, and brand owners can add product details as well. Investigating Innovations This discovery was made under the New Plastics Econo- my program of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which in- vestigated different innovations to improve post-consumer recycling. Digital watermarks were found to be the most promising technology, gathering support among the major- ity of stakeholders and passing a basic proof of concept on a test sorting line. Pepsico has stated that the technology offers the ability to make life simpler for consumers because they will not have to separate their packaging and worry about which plastic polymer is which. Instead, through this trial, the product packaging will be encoded with these invisible digital wa- termarks, which contain information about the manufac- turer, product, material type and whether the packaging is food safe. SWANA Announces Achievement Award winners The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWA- NA) announced the recipients of its annual Professional Achievement Awards on July 28.
