Resolution for More Ease, Less Perfection, & More Fun

As I reflect on this year, I am so grateful I have worked on giving up the idea of trying to be perfect over the holiday season. No more perfectly decorated home, a tree that looks like it came out of the Hallmark store, and sugar cookies pretty enough you don’t want to eat them. I am fine with others who aspire to this and feel it is actually FUN for them. I just realized that wasn’t “me.” And more and more ... I am working on being a little more “me.” I’m the mom who is going to let the house be messy on Christmas and snuggle up in our PJs with a Christmas movie and some yummy Cacao Bliss. That’s what my kids want, and that’s what they need from me for the holidays. The years I spent trying to be the mom who “did it all” during the holidays were more exhausting than fun. I wasn’t living my truth, and I had to give myself the grace to not be the mom I thought I had to be. This holiday season, I want to challenge you to drop the image of perfection. You don’t have to wear the best holiday clothes. Your presents don’t have to be perfect, and your cookies can be frosted however you like. Your party doesn’t have to be the bash of the decade. Your family and friends will still love you if you burn the ham or turkey. You have value, my friend, regardless of how much ... or little you achieve during the holidays. This time is all about love; it’s all about connecting with our families and others. This time signifies celebrating whatever your religious beliefs are and the feeling of togetherness. After I made that change and became the mom I knew I could be, something amazing happened. The holidays became more fun and a little easier, too. I was like a little kid who learned a big lesson, taking each day as it came. Letting go of the expectation for perfection and, instead, focusing on your truth is the most vital tool for achieving the goals you set. You learn to value yourself, and you have more fun, too! Leave those worries at the door, love. It’s time to focus on your connection to life’s daily moments instead. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 ...

Taking In Life’s Moments

15-minute workout served my body. And it continues to help me heal. I deserve it and thrive on it. Building From Within You also deserve pockets of self-love, but you don’t have to wait for the new year to tell you it’s time. Now’s the time, and whatever you choose to do, make sure you are choosing the action that will serve you. You’re a woman of service, and I know it’s easy to let the pursuit of perfection swallow up your self-care moments. Find where you can give yourself the grace to release the expectations you have set for yourself. Lower yourself from the pedestal you are standing on, my love. Remember, you cannot fill a cup that is broken. Before you begin to move forward with your goals, you have to build yourself up. It’s best to serve from your saucer, not your cup. With any goal you set, there has to be a monumental shift in how you think of yourself. It takes radical self-love to find the healing you need. Our goals are predicated on it. I know you have the strength inside you! Break down the barriers standing between you and your goals by discovering the power you hold within yourself. The year may be nearly over, but the calendar doesn’t dictate how and when you place value on yourself and the moments you choose. Love, you can make a difference in your life in the final days of 2019! Don’t commit to change in 2020 until you have built a foundation that is going to empower you to make real improvements.

So, how did this year go for you? Did you accomplish everything you set out to do, or were your plans derailed? If they were, you’re not alone! Research tells us that New Year’s resolutions are difficult to keep, and I know this can be especially true when you don’t enter the year with the right mindset. And, truthfully, it doesn’t matter how you fared! What matters most is that you reflect on how you can better serve yourself. Think about it this way. We always have two reactions as the new year approaches. There are those who see the end of the year coming and panic. They think, “Oh, my goodness! All these goals from the beginning of the year are never going to get done. I might as well wait until 2020.” Then there are those who see the closing of a year and panic in a different way … and they scramble, rushing about trying to fit a year’s worth of goals into 30 days. And here’s the secret: You don’t have to place so much emphasis on the calendar! We are the drivers of our own destiny. Every day we’re given a gift, and we decide what to focus on. Remember, how you approach the end of the year is just as important as what you do. It’s the tasks you do each day that move the needle forward on your goals. It’s the moments you are present that count. I encourage you to find ways to do what is good for you. Maybe it’s a daily walk or one of my quick, full-body workout regimens. Find the coziest

chair in your home and settle in with a cup of tea or yummy Cacao Bliss hot chocolate. (This is one of my favorite things to do!) Watch the snow lightly fall outside, or listen to your kids play and giggle. Set aside a few minutes each day to journal three things you are grateful for. Find these moments by asking, “What can I do to serve my body? Does it need rest? Does it need fuel? Am I craving connection, and whom can I call?” I find my moments in daily workouts. As you may know, when I was healing from the loss of my infant son, I relied on my body to sustain me. My heart had broken into thousands of tiny pieces, and on days when it felt my soul may never be put back together again, I knew I had to keep moving. I used sweat therapy to push myself further and find the strength I didn’t even know existed. Busting out a “Letting go of the expectation for perfection and, instead, focusing on your truth is the most vital tool for achieving the goals you set. You learn to value yourself, and you have more fun, too!”

The most important piece of your success is you.

And, sister, you’ve got this!

Unmasking Sugar

5 Ingredients That Are Actually Sugar in Disguise

W ith Christmas right around the hot chocolate served at your kids’ school play, and the candy canes hanging on the tree. But did you know that sugar actually hides in a lot of surprising foods, too? In the last few years, big processed-food companies have gotten really, really good at sneaking sugar into their products, and that includes everything from whole-wheat crackers to condiments. Sugar is a master of disguise — and since ingredients can’t wear baseball caps and funny mustaches, it slips past people by masquerading under dozens of different names. In fact, HealthLine.com recently counted 56 different names manufacturers use for sugar! How crazy is that? Here are five common ones to look for next time you hit the grocery store: High-Fructose Corn Syrup This is probably the most common stage name for sugar. It’s made from processed corn, and while it hasn’t yet been definitively linked to health problems worse than those caused by sugar, the Cleveland corner, you probably already feel surrounded by sugar — it’s in the plate of cookies at the office, the

Fruit Juice Concentrate Fruit juice concentrate does come from fruit, but once the water is extracted, what’s left is almost all sugar! According to LiveStrong.com, the distillation process destroys the vitamin C and fiber boosts you’d get from whole fruits. If you haven’t already, try to go seven days without sugar (including coconut sugar; raw, unfiltered honey; and 100% pure maple syrup if you’d like a challenge!) and see how it changes your body. While you’re at it, don’t forget to snap before and after pictures and share them with the tribe!

Clinic says eating too much of it could lead to “insulin resistance, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.” Yikes! Sucrose This sweetener is also called “table sugar” or “common sugar” — in other words, it’s typical white granulated sugar, but with a more scientific- sounding name. Evaporated Cane Juice The “cane” in evaporated cane juice is, you guessed it, sugar cane! Basically, this is just sugar by another name, although NPR reports it may have a hint more molasses than the white stuff. Golden Syrup The name “golden syrup” might make you think of honey, but this pretender doesn’t come with the same health benefits. In fact, it’s just an inverted sugar syrup with British roots!

RECIPE

Pumpkin Roll

Ingredients

Directions

Cake • 3/4 cup gluten-free flour • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice • 1/4 tsp ground allspice • 1/4 tsp salt

4. Beat in vanilla extract and pumpkin purée. 5. Using a spatula, gently fold in sifted flour mixture. Pour batter into the prepared pan, evenly spreading the batter with a spatula or knife. 6. Bake about 13–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the cake, when lightly pressed, springs back. 7. Immediately after removing the cake from the oven, invert the cake onto a clean dish towel. Carefully remove the parchment paper from the bottom of the cake and sprinkle lightly with flour or powdered sugar; roll the cake up with the towel while it is still hot and pliable. Place on a wire rack to cool. Filling

• 3 large eggs • 1/2 cup coconut sugar • 1/2 tsp vanilla • 2/3 cup canned pumpkin purée • Extra flour to sprinkle on the counter for rolling

Filling

• 6 oz light cream cheese or Neufchatel cheese at room temperature (NOT fat-free) • 6 oz fat-free Greek yogurt (Fage brand is great.) • 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 3 tbsp100% maple syrup • 1/8 cup powdered sugar (optional, for sprinkling) • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, yogurt, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy. Add maple syrup and beat until smooth; fold in walnuts (if using).

Pumpkin Roll 1. Heat oven to 375 F, and place an oven rack in the center of the oven. Spray a 15x10-inch baking pan with nonstick spray, line it with parchment paper, then spray a little more nonstick spray and lightly flour the parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, allspice, and salt.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Assembly 8. Unroll the pumpkin cake, spread filling on the cake, and re-roll. Transfer to your serving platter. 9. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. (You can serve this immediately but chilling it overnight sets the filling and makes it easier to slice.)

3. Beat the eggs and sugar together with electric or hand mixer. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes, or until thickened.

This is considered a special occasion recipe.

NUTRITION

Motivator No. 2: Habit The longer you’ve held onto a behavior, the more likely you are to stick to it without thinking. Brushing your teeth is a great example, but it holds true for our eating patterns, too. Many people still have dessert every day because they grew up doing it! According to Psychology Today, if we’re eating out of habit, our brains don’t even tell us when we’re full. Motivator No. 3: Boredom On a slow day at home, it can be really easy to eat a whole bag of chips without noticing. That’s because eating tasty foods releases dopamine in our brains, creating a positive feedback loop that makes us want to reach for another bite. Without anything else to keep your mind busy, that little jolt of pleasure will always make you want another chip. With all of these factors working against you, overeating might sound inevitable. But don’t worry, it isn’t! There are actually a lot of tricks you can store up your sleeve, like planning delicious snacks throughout the day to tickle your dopamine receptors, staying busy with hobbies you’re passionate about to avoid boredom, or drinking a big glass of water or tea at a party to keep your hands busy. The most effective strategy to avoid overeating, though, is simply staying mindful. If you find yourself reaching for a snack, stop for a moment and ask yourself, “Why do I want this?” If the answer is “Because everyone else is having one,” and not “Because I’m hungry,” or “Because it will nourish my body,” you know it’s time to step out of the kitchen.

WHY DO WE EAT?

Have you ever been at a party and started feeling a bit awkward, then found yourself wandering over to the buffet for something to snack on just so you can keep your hands busy? Sister, we’ve all been there, and for a reason! Multiple studies have found that much more than hunger influences our decision to eat. Here’s a quick rundown on three unexpected reasons why we snack. Motivator No. 1: Social Pressure Food is a huge part of socialization, and if you’re invited out with friends, not eating can seem rude even if you aren’t hungry! Plus, according to WebMD, “people pleasers” are prone to eating more at social gatherings just to do something nice, like make a host feel their food is appreciated.

Celebrating Our Way

“We’d come flying out of the hallway, marveling at the gorgeous Christmas lights and the presents that magically found their way beneath the tree the night before.”

Finally, we’d find ourselves gathered in the hall, giddy excitement pouring out of us at an obscenely early hour.

Then, our parents would say those magic words: “On your marks … Get set … Go!”

We’d come flying out of the hallway, marveling at the gorgeous Christmas lights and the presents that magically found their way beneath the tree the night before. To this day, that is one of my favorite holiday memories, and it’s a feeling I never want to lose. Being on the other side of this tradition is also a wonderful experience. My youngest will tap on our bedroom door Christmas morning, snuggle her way into our bed, and one by one, the whole family arrives. If grandparents are visiting, the girls run down to grab them, and the same rule applies. We all have to wait in our bedroom until we can go into the living room together to see the magical wonderland our family room has transformed into overnight. It’s the most beautiful way to begin our holiday. The morning is slow and relaxed. The kids excitedly unwrap their gifts, and everyone lounges in their PJs or onesies from the night before. There’s no pressure, and there’s no need to rush off somewhere. We just enjoy the morning, letting the holiday unfold before us. Of course, the living room becomes a mess … and I let it stay that way! That’s what the holidays are for. They’re imperfect. It’s a silly time meant for fun and laughter. Afterward, we make our way to the kitchen for breakfast, and on Christmas, there are no limits! Some of us have a brownie for breakfast; others indulge in whatever they can find. Sometimes

THE TRAD I T IONS THAT MAKE OUR HOME MERRY AND BR IGHT

My four brothers and I could barely contain our excitement leading up to Christmas each year. Our home was buzzing with holiday activity. Every Christmas Eve, we went to bed filled with excitement over what the beautifully decorated tree would look like the next day. Bursting with joy, we would sneak into our parents’ room the next

morning, crawl into their bed, and snuggle. We weren’t allowed in the living room until everyone was awake, but that was okay with us. This was a coveted morning for us. It was one of the few times we were allowed in our parents’ bed, and I soaked it up every year.

it’s leftover waffles, and other times, we enjoy a traditional holiday dinner for breakfast. It’s just a holiday free-for-all! Every year, Craig and I keep the holidays focused on the kids. In return, we turn into big kids ourselves! We keep our Christmas simple and focus on what will make the kids happiest. For our family, sledding is our big event of the holiday season. Some years we’re on the hill more than others, but we always try to make it out on Christmas Day. We head to our local sledding hills or travel to the big courses that pull us up, up, up, before we come flying down the hill, barely holding on to our inner tubes and laughing the whole way down. We always bring our dog, Ollie, along, too. She loves to run and play in the snow! (And we love to watch and play alongside her!) Back home, we warm up with delicious Cacao Bliss hot cocoa. It’s already a big part of our lives, but during the holidays, we drink it morning, noon, and night! I believe good, healthy nutrition sustains us, but more than that, it connects us and produces lifelong memories. Plus, food is a major part of the holidays. If my eldest daughter is in the mood, she will whip up a fantastic Christmas Eve meal. Or, we may enjoy waffles with all the fixings in our PJs. One year, we decided to give back with the yummy food we are lucky to enjoy each day. Our family made hundreds of no-bake peanut butter chocolate protein balls for homeless members of our community. We wrapped these balls up into little packages and delivered them directly to people in need. In the past, we have even taken orders and purchased meals for them, too. It’s such a small, easy action that celebrates the love of this season, and it

means so much to some people. It was beautiful to give healthy, whole foods to our community.

I couldn’t imagine our holidays without the simple, fun traditions we hold dear. Last year, Craig and I were planning a family trip to Peru during the holidays. We wanted to give the girls a nice break from school. (Plus, as you know, our Cacao Bliss comes from Peru!) But, as we began to plan this trip, we realized what we would be losing. Christmas is still magical for our girls. We would be giving up Christmas afternoon sledding, waffles on Christmas Eve, a morning spent in our pajamas, and that electrifying moment when the girls see the tree for the first time. In the end, we didn’t go because we couldn’t miss the parts of the holiday that make it special — like on Christmas Eve when we’re usually snuggled up in our onesies.

Some years, though, we opt for sillier outfits. One year, my youngest daughter decided she wanted to make us all ugly sweaters for the holiday. She picked out all these weird bells, stuffed animals, and strange fixings, and we could not stop giggling as we sewed up the creations. On Christmas Eve, we handed out the wrapped-up sweaters and did a fun gift exchange. It was quite a surprise to discover what we had to wear all evening! I enjoy our traditions and the silly memories we create, and I know I’ll cherish them forever. They’re not perfect, but they are exactly what we want them to be: beautiful, blissful, and merry.

From my silly, wonderful family to yours, have a happy holiday!

FITNESS IN A FLASH 3 HEALTH BENEFITS OF QUICK WORKOUTS

2. They boost your metabolism. A revved up metabolism helps you burn fat, and a great way to get your metabolism in gear is with short bursts of intense exercise. According to Muscle and Fitness magazine, Tabata intervals can double your metabolic rate for 30 minutes after you finish them, and other high-intensity interval training routines have similar effects. “The more intense the exercise, the more your body needs to recover, which translates to more calories burned after you stop,” Muscle and Fitness reports. 3. They improve your mindset. We all know that exercise is great for mental health because it releases endorphins, which put us in a better mood. But did you know you can reap those benefits in just 10 minutes? According to The New York Times, studies show that working out just 10 minutes per day can make us more cheerful. Regardless of the type of workout you choose or how much time you have to do it, remember to listen to your body — even moving for a few minutes is an accomplishment! To find a range of short workouts perfect for your holiday schedule, visit Members.FitRise.com.

If your holidays go anything like ours, then you probably feel like you’re being pulled in a dozen different directions. Food needs to be cooked, parties need to be planned, plane tickets need to be booked — and in all of that chaos, you need to find time to take care of your own health and fitness! We get it. Life is busy, which is why Danette advocates doing what you can and suggests short, 10- or 15-minute workouts you can squeeze into even the craziest schedule. That said, it might be hard to believe that sweating for just 10–15 minutes can be effective. If you’ve been considering skipping a short workout because you think it won’t help you toward your goals, check out these three ways quick, intense workouts benefit your health. 1. They raise your heart rate. Just like any other muscle, your heart needs to be exercised to stay healthy and strong! Bringing your heart rate up with a bit of intense cardio can have long- lasting benefits, according to studies

surveyed by Entrepreneur magazine. “During every period of intense exercise, you are increasing your cardiovascular ability,” Entrepreneur reported. “Going forward, the heart needs less time to rest, which builds its stamina and improves its ability to use oxygen and maintain an

elevated heart rate for an extended period of time.”

SUCCESS STORY

MEET CARLA LOWERY! STOR I ES F ROM THE S I STERHOOD W hen Carla joined our tribe in 2017, she was in a rut with her health and mindset. She’d lost some weight but was struggling with holding herself accountable to keep it off — something we can all relate to! While mired in that funk, Carla came across Danette May on Facebook and decided to take a leap. She joined the sisterhood and stepped onto a new path. Carla signed up for her first 30-day challenge right away, and even though she was afraid to share her photos and measurements at first, she was stunned by her results.

“I completed it feeling so much energy, and I looked at myself and actually saw my own beauty staring me right in the face via my mirror!” she says.

Now, Carla has tackled four Fit Rise challenges. As pleased as she is with her physical results, what impacted her most was Danette’s meditation and mindset training. “I learned that it really is MINDSET that keeps us on course completely,” Carla says. “And baby, all the tools are here! It’s up to you, me, and all of us to use them and create a life, the life you’ve always desired for yourself.” Coming to this realization was a process, and it wasn’t always easy. After that first successful challenge, Carla dove into Danette’s philosophy and the Fit Rise lifestyle. She reached milestone after milestone but eventually lost momentum. “I hit a bit of a roadblock and noticed little by little I was falling back into my old ways and mindsets that no longer served me,” she says. “And you know, I knew it, too. But I felt somewhat helpless and not willing to reach out as much. There were old emotions surfacing, and frankly, I was a bit scared because, after all I had accomplished, I didn’t know how I would be able to deliver my accountability.” Carla applied to become an Ambassador for Fit Rise. She was accepted, and thanks to the other sisters relying on her guidance, she got her accountability back! If you take away one thing from her story, Carla says she’d like it to be the importance of being honest with yourself and holding yourself accountable, even if no one else is watching.

“If ever I find myself being hard on myself or feeling down, I can get a pick- me-up simply by seeing and hearing my tribe sisters’ posts in Fit Rise 365,” she says. “This group of beautiful women is always great support in times of uncertainty.”

Carla, from all of us here on the Danette May team, thank you for sharing your journey. We’re so proud of how far you’ve come!

M akeup brushes are some of the most useful tools in your cosmetic arsenal. They help you apply your makeup flawlessly to achieve your signature look. But if you don’t take the time to clean them regularly, you could be at risk for some serious skin care issues. See why you might want to consider giving those trusty bristles a good scrub. According to a poll conducted on behalf of Anisa International, 61% of women who use makeup brushes clean them less than once a month or not at all. Your dirty makeup brushes are breeding grounds for acne-causing bacteria and skin-irritating organisms, which you wipe across your face every time you use your brushes. In addition to the ickiness, dirty brushes are more difficult to work with. If you’re going for a light sweep of blush for your grandma’s 80th birthday party, you’re going to have trouble achieving that look with the neon pigments coating your brush from last week’s costume party. WHY DOES IT MATTER? There are many ways to clean your makeup brushes, but you don’t have to go out and purchase a special brush cleaner. Simply swirl the bristles in a shallow mixture of antibacterial dish soap, olive oil, and warm water to deeply clean the brush. Be careful to avoid getting water near your brush’s ferrule, which can damage the glue that holds it together. Gently squeeze out the excess water and shape the bristles before laying your brush out to dry over a cup or on a towel. For frequent makeup users, a spray cleanser can make it easier to clean your brushes daily, but you will still need to do regular deep cleanings to keep bacteria at bay. The answer here can vary depending on the kinds of brushes you use and how often you use them. If you’re a makeup artist, cleaning your brushes after every application is recommended, but if you’re just a makeup fanatic, you may want to clean your brushes once a week. For the average makeup wearer, 1–4 cleanings per month will get the job done if you only apply light amounts of makeup. Remember that even though foundation brushes are larger, eyeshadow brushes often have the most gunk. So much of your makeup application relies on having a nice canvas, so protecting your skin from built-up oil and acne-causing bacteria is worth the few minutes it takes to clean your brushes.
