King's Business - 1958-06

Joey smiled as they walked down the bluff together. “ Your letter came to my moth er’s house, Mrs. Dudley Pendleton, Sr. I teach in a Bible college in South Dakota and Mother sent it on to me. I was glad to hear news of Bill. He’s the one that showed me the right road when we were boys. I thought I’d just come down in person instead of writing. You see, I heard how Jim O’Grady was coming to Wailing Waters and I thought I’d see him, too. Jim O’Grady was one of my students. I like to think that it was through my efforts he decided to become an evangelist. But of course it all goes back to your Uncle Bill. He’s the one who laid the groundwork for me to become a Christian teacher. “ I came on the bus and asked for Bill. They said he lived just across the river and I thought I’d walk. When I found the bridge out and heard Jim wasn’t coming I was really disappointed. It was the only thing Jim could do but I knew that I had to see Bill after I read that letter of yours. I had to show him that the seeds he sowed had taken hold, even if I did get off the trail in that little worldly college for awhile.” Bill brought out the easy chair for Dudley and they sat there talk ing and Bill didn’t smoke, Joey noted, though the mosquitoes had started to bite. The gentleness had won out on Uncle Bill’s face — that was one miracle. And Bill’s saying he’d consider going to Dudley’s Bible school, that was another mir acle. And the way Bill laughed real warm-like and shook his head at Dudley’s account of how he’d crossed the river just to make Bill believe in miracles, that was a mir acle, too, Joey knew. And Joey could think of at least one more miracle. He almost hadn’t gone to vespers because of his dis appointment in not getting to see Jim O’Grady. If he hadn’t been up there on the bluff he knew Dudley Pendleton wouldn’t have had a chance of ever finding Uncle Bill’s cabin hidden in the trees the way it was. It was a miracle, he was sure of that. There was still a little light in the sky and Joey saw that two vapor trails bisected each other, kind of like a cross. END.
